BLEEDING HEARTS #3 (DC COMICS)

Poke is going through changes.

The “normal” zombie has developed a problem. His undead heart started beating again. Regaining feelings is something very out of the ordinary in this world. This never becomes more evident when he confronts Cara and Rabbit.

Instead of trying to feast on the humans, Poke has a sense of empathy taking over him. With a horde closing in, the only thought it to keep them alive.

BLEEDING HEARTS #3 by Deniz Camp, Stipan Morian, Matt Hollingsworth, & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS) peels back more layers on this unique tale.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what is unfolding now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Camp throws a spin into this already complex dynamic early in the chapter. Poke’s processing of Human English is a sly twist in dealing with his new emotions. The writing exposes his internal pull as these new feeling take hold. Cara’s reactions is quite the opposite. Readers watch as her fear fuels the anger building to survive. It pushes Cara to try eliminating the caring zombie with conflict from her daughter. This becomes the tip on an oncoming dangerous iceberg they can’t duck.

Readers watch as the horde gathers to usher in a session of affairs. The structure of this assembly leads to a troublesome path Poke’s best laid plans appear to go up in smoke. This dangerous feeling is only elevated more by Cara’s internal monologue. The unsettling reality of what’s coming sinks in. Cara’s decision making is rash and filled with panic. Even Rabbit’s pleas fall on deaf ears. One scene brings this horror into full display. Its’ resolution is more calm in construction. This pushes events into its’ closing with more questions looming in the air. Another fantastic read.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Morian & Hollingsworth open with a more wild vision of Poke’s run-in with Cara and Rabbit. All parties eyes tell a different story. Readers can sympathize with Poke as he tries communicating his emotions. Cara’s cold stares never break in these moments. Their back and forth tease the reluctant “friendship” forming. This can’t happen fast enough as more trouble arrives, An incredible two-age splash welcomes more to the party with peace not being on the docket of discussion.

Mush’s interrogation is deceptive in presentation. His eyes give more away as he listens to Poke speak. This theme moves into Cara’s frantic attempt to hide. The panels showcase her troubles staying out of sight. Rabbit’s blind optimism causes its’ fair share of conflict. Even as their plans to leave begin, there is an overwhelming sense of failure coming. The full page image of the chase sparks a wild reaction from Cara. The half panel choice will be an image readers will be discussing for certain. It results in an unlikely action as events speed to close. The art locks in on the facial reactions heavily in these moments. It leads to a solid final page with more questions raised than answered.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Just when you think you have the answers, Camp and Morian scramble up the questions. The latest chapter dives heavy into the emotional weight Poke is now carrying. Fans will be mesmerized by the incredible visuals pouring out on the pages. Trust me, you haven’t read a zombie tale like this one!
