BLEEDING HEARTS #2 by Deniz Camp, Stipan Morian, Matt Hollingsworth, & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Camp hits readers with a different look for this chapter. Opening where Poke discovers Cara and Rabbit, the mood is puzzling. A beating heart throws off the zombie defense. It results in a peak into Rabbit’s birth. The writing shows the world of child birth in this difficult landscape. Readers watch as Cara and Solomon go through the range of emotions before being snapped back into the morbid world they reside in.

Once Cara comes to, the panic begins to subside. It is a rare feeling when one can take a breath in this fashion. This moves Cara reflecting on Solomon’s last moments before continuing to move. The panels are brief but hit that emotional connection. Camp throws another curve are readers when the spotlight turns to Rabbit's missing stuffie, Flip. The writing brings forth the deep meaning of the toy figure. This amplifies the finish that much more. Readers watch as their luck continues to expand when Flip re-emerges. The reunion looks to have formed another bond as the pages hit their last stop. Another strong piece of character work is on full display here.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Morian & Hollingsworth begin with a full shot of Cara ready to fire on Poke. The scenes are frantic as Poke defends himself. This ushers in Rabbit’s birth flashback. The art shows the uncomfortable means Cara and Solomon have to use when Cara’s water breaks. These panels hold nothing back. It’s a series of emotions that lead into the next phase of images.

Readers watch as the flashbacks slip away. What’s left is a full image of Cara running for a dream-esque stairwell. The reality of who is carrying Cara to safety slips in between the dark lit gym floor. This spins into a paranoid wake-up which doesn’t have time to sink in. Cara knows what’s needed to survive. This dips between flashbacks of Solomon’s last moments. Once events slow up, Rabbit and her stuffie take the stage. The art hits all the key elements to show the doll’s impact. This leads into a startling series of panels to close with. None more greater than the final page. There’s so much to enjoy with the visual experience on display.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5

Camp and Morian continue their unorthodox zombie tale with an incredible new chapter. Cara’s struggles come to haunting reality with the writing. The art hits readers with many impactful looks that always keeps them guessing. This is one zombie tale that won’t be soon forgotten.
