ACTION COMICS #1101 by Mark Waid, Montos, Ivan Plascencia & Steve Wands (DC Comics) continues “Kingdom Of Zod”

Let’s take a look at what’s happening now.

ACTION COMICS #1101 by Mark Waid, Montos, Ivan Plascencia & Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid opens events with the Zod recap (previously seen in Supergirl #16). The backstory sees Zod’s counter attack on Queen Ursa’s funeral. It is as brutal as one might suspect. Once events jump to present day, the Kryptonite plague is spreading worldwide. This gives the event more impact to the lasting effects of Zod’s plans. This point also provides a solid pivot for Superman to re-enter the DCU with many questions following.

Readers watch as the combat escalates in El Caldero. The Eradicaterix battling Supergirl has a huge aura around it as it feels larger than life. Zod’s dialogue to Lois Lane steals the spotlight away to push his scheming. Their banter is classic in delivery. Readers get steady breaks in between this with more action from the large ensemble cast. That said, it is still Zod’s issue. the brutality shown takes no breaks as his plans come to fruition. Events move to a more surprising ending than expected, Seeing who’s the opposition now makes for a good match-up to be had.

READ LAST ISSUES REVIEW!

Montos jumps in for art duties here. The opening is the grainy video footage form the Eradicator files. This comes across very well with the panels playing like an archive. As events jump to the present, the world effect of the Kryptonite outbreak is immense. A full page image shows the ramifications in Metropolis. It sets up the time stream return with some great reaction spots. Nothing can prepare the heroes for what they’re coming back to.

The full shot of Supergirl’s fight ushers in the chaos on El Caldero. Panels showcase the frantic scene as the heroes are getting weaker by the page. This allows for Zod to take his victories with extreme close-ups. The intensity here is unmatched. It is balanced out by more action with the “Super” team trying to hang on. A full shot of Zod’s decree holds nothing back while he speaks with Lois. This only grows more unstable as the ending comes around. Readers get a great shot to close out events. The full image offers some hope for survival but will it be enough? Time will tell.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Superman’s return to the timeline might be too late as Zod takes control! Waid pens a steady build of the Volatile Kyrptonian on the attack. Montos and Plascencia bring the action as the fight keeps escalating out of control. Will hope bend the knee to the Kingdom of Zod? Only one way to find out!
