ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #18 by Al Ewing, Jahnoy Lindsay &Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Ewing takes this story into an unlikely place due to Hawke’s involvement. The look at 1943 is brutal and hides nothing. Hawke’s pursuit of evil is clear as she attacks the Nazis. Her encounter with the Baron is filled with tension. Readers can sense how one false move will have grave consequences. The dialogue is sharp and cutting. It’s perfect for what is about to be unleashed in their ordeal.
Tapping into anything involving the Anti-Life Equation is enough to garner a reaction all its’ own. The encounter takes on a life of its’ own as the Black Zero is accessed with a monstrous debut following. This escalates events to a shocking end and Hawke’s new stat quo. her banter with Baz is more casual as they sort out what to do next. The story shifts gears to force a brash choice. It steers the pair into new beginnings but not without lingering questions. The final pages reveal much more as a new mystery is about to be unlocked. Brace for it.

Lindsey returns to art duties for this chapter. The opening page eludes to greater powers watching. This serves to take readers into the past. Hawke’s assault is fluid as she is taking out targets at will. The 2 for 1 special is structured very well to lock in on the moment. It pushes events into the meeting with the Baron. Coloring makes these pages pop as the evil intent starts taking hold. A series of near full images make the way for another player to step into frame.
A series of two page spreads bring the action to a fever pitch. It leaves a bold impression on Hawke’s fate before returning time to the present. Her encounter with Baz shows calm in an uncertain place. This all becomes upended when a higher power becomes involved. Readers watch as this prompts some quick action before pivoting events into a final landing spot. The rendezvous with another key player sets the stage for a greater clue to be unlocked. It leaves a questionable final page for fans to process until next time. Can’t help but wonder where this leads after that image.
FINAL POINT: 8.2
The secret life of Emily Hawke is revealed as more questions loom in the horizon. Ewing dips away from Jo’s story to weave in a throwback tale. Lindsey returns with a solid showcase of the insanity of 1943. Where things go from here are anyone’s gamble.
