BATMAN #13 (DC COMICS)

Gotham City has gone green in the worst possible way.

With the budding feud between Mayor Pamela Isley & GCPD Commissioner Vandal Savage spiraling out of control, drastic action has happened. Isley has released a plant attack that is killing the city slowly.

Savage has an ultimate weapon to kill Isley. If he does, the city never returns from Isely’s fatal moves. Batman heads into the belly of a beast to stop Savage at all costs! There’s no easy way out from this confrontation.

BATMAN #13 by Matt Fraction, Matteo Scalera, Tomeu Morey & Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS) continues the “Bad Seeds” event!

Let’s take a deeper dive into this explosive encounter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Fraction crafts an intense look at the high stakes Isley has created in this new chapter. The opening pages show the horrific state of affairs take hold of the City. Batman’s quiet rescue shows the compassion he has for the city residents before heading into a grave unknown. Readers instantly know there is turning back from this hostile invasion he planned.

The infiltration of the GCPD never escapes a high level of tension. Every advancement is met with more resistance as Batman’s struggles grow. Fraction keeps challenging him at every level. The writing shows the unbreakable will being startled at points. It drives forward with no regard for consequences. It leads to a bold encounter with an officer that sets the stage for the close. If there was ever a moment to see Batman’s influence in Gotham, this fight is it. The closing pages drop quite the exclamation point as a long awaited meeting finally commences. Never doubt the power of a focused mind.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Scalerasteps in to team with Morey for art duties this round. The nine grid open shows the methodical breakdown of Batman’s rescue. It shows his growing concern over Isley’s plans taking hold. This leads to a clam view of the GCPD headquarters. Inside the building, the mood is strangely normal considering events. This sense doesn’t last long.

Readers watch as Batman bursts into the building via two page spread. The loud chaos continues at every turn. Panels show the fight to get to Savage isn’t fair. The hallway scenes show how uneven the odds are against him. The fight is very fast paced and showcases the frantic race against time. It never holds back on the lines Bats will cross to get to the indented target. This moves into a haunting solo fight. Batman’s cold composure does more than just win. It sends the message he intends with a chilling full shot. The final page raises more eyebrows as the full shot shows the heat is turning up higher.

FINAL GRADE: 9.2

To save Gotham City, Batman jumps into a fire raging out of control. Fraction lights the match with an incredible script. Scalera and Morey bring breathtaking action on each page. The Dark Knight has never seen a fight like this before.
