INVINCIBLE - SEASON 4 REVIEW *** SPOILER FREE*** (PRIME VIDEO)

Invincible season 4 trailer (Prime Video/Amazon MGM Studios)

Can Mark Grayson pick up the pieces in the Conquest aftermath?

That is the question swirling around the return of the beloved PRIME VIDEO animated series based off an iconic comic series from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment.

Invincible (2003 to 2018) by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley has carved out a legacy that still influences fans and creators to this day. If there was ever doubts of this, just look at the homage covers, Battle Beast spin-off series and forthcoming video game (debuting April 30th) as examples of its’ lasting impact.

In March of 2021, the comic debuted on Prime Video in animated form. It became an instant smash hit with its’ faithful representation of the source material and incredible voice acting. Steven Yeun in the role of Mark Grayson has led an all-star cast through the trails and tribulation of becoming a superhero in this day and age for three seasons.

At New York Comic Con in 2025, news was confirmed on the next chapter of Grayson’s animated life with an excellent “Probably The Best Invincible Panel In The History Of Invincible Panels At NYCC” showcase. It’s been a long wait since then, but it is finally over.

Season 4 is set to debut on March 18th on Prime Video. Fanlight Zone was granted early screening privileges to the new season so here is our SPOILER FREE review!

*** SPOILER-FREE SERIES REVIEW ***

For anyone fearing there would be a let-down at this stage, their fears can be put to rest. The current season carries a very somber feel to it coming off of the heels of Conquest’s devastating attack. This is very prevalent in Mark Grayson’s look at the world. Yeun brings out the pain and sorrow hidden inside the young hero. It is a side that gives a very realistic look inside the “perfect” world of good guys vs. bad guys. When losses are as grave as they were against both Conquest and Angstrom Levy, it is not something anyone can just move on from.

Viewers watch as Mark goes through many stages in dealing with the lasting effects. It’s very organic in progression. This also causes new aspects of relationships to arise. No matter who he comes across, there is a very different feel taking place. It is not one of optimism as heroes inspire. The feel comes across more of a panic not to let history repeat itself at any costs. This theme becomes a plot driver as events shift forward. Mark isn’t the only one feeling the effects of events in their souls.

Atom Eve (voiced by Gillian Jacobs) is dealing with her own fallout from Conquest in her own way. Increasing her superhero work load comes with its’ own set of difficulties. None more evident than one confrontation leads to a startling realization. Something is wrong with her powers. Jacobs navigates this ever-evolving status with ease, displaying many sides to the powerful hero. This only grows stronger as more changes to her world start unfolding.

I’ve been intentionally coy about Nolan aka Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), but have no doubts. He plays a very important part in what comprises this season. Another phenomenal performance from Simmons is on deck. That’s the only thing I can really say without giving away too much.

That said, one character continues to steal scenes in this super-chaotic world. Debbie Grayson (voiced by Sandra Oh) deals with her own challenges to her status quo. The exchanges with her family reflect much of the viewer’s sympathy in watching their traumas evolve. This becomes more complicated with a blossoming relationship forming in the wake of her past with Nolan. Oh maximizes time on every scene to make it stand out. This makes one interaction so powerful when it transpires. Viewers will immediately be blown away by the performance. It is one of the strongest moments of the season without question. That is saying something considering how talented the overall cast is.

Speaking of the cast, one new addition has had fans talking since NYCC.Lee Pace was announced as the voice actor of the Grand Regent of the Viltrum Empire, THRAGG! The villainous figure is a presence in every scene featured. His cold and determined persona shines under Pace’s performance. If anyone isn’t familiar with the character, they will be leaving with a clear definition of what he brings to the table. Once he starts making moves, it becomes the catalyst for something greater.

With all the talk about the drama, one might ask about the action. It’s Invincible. There’s no way the creators are holding back on this. Viewers can expect the brutal fights taken up a few levels and then some. The season has a few jaw-dropping moments to check the boxes in that category. One jumps ahead of the pack as far as “HOLY &^%” moments. It plays an integral part in the overall scenarios at play. If anything, the sense is “how can we top this?” and the creative teams find a way to do exactly that.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5/10

Mark Grayson’s challenged with an adversary he must defeat: his own self-guilt as the world around him is forever changed in a magnificent fourth season. Yeun delivers a sensational performance with Mark’s new challenges. Jacobs and Oh create their own show-stealing moments alongside an excellent supporting cast. “Invincible” remains the pinnacle for modern superhero animation. Don’t miss it!
