BEST BATMAN EVENTS: BATMAN DAY 2026

In 87 years, Batman has gone through his fair share of events.

Some have pushed him past his limits into uncharted water. Others have broken him to his core, only to come back reforged stronger.

The movies and TV/Animation projects have covered some of these epic time periods. They don’t do justice like the actual comic issues they’re inspired from.

THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE FIRST TIME PICKING UP AN ISSUE AND UNLOCKING A MOMENT IN HISTORY!

So for this Batman Day article, the FLZ team is taking a look at some of the best Batman events. Let’s dive in. (all art credit: DC COMICS)

detective comics #604 (1989)

Alan Grant, Norm Breyfogle, Steve Mitchell, Adrienne Roy & Todd Klien

Batman must face off against his shape-shifting foe. This match up is very different as Clayface III as brought some other friends with him.

Why it makes the list:

My pick for a favorite Batman event is a little off the beaten path.

As a kid who was a huge Marvel Zombie, I, like everyone, got swept up in BatMania in 1989.

Curious to try a Batman comic outside of a random issue here and there I started with Detective Comics 604, the start of “The Mud Pack” four parter as Batman takes on all four villains to call themselves Clayface.

Incredible Norm Breyfogle art with Alan Grant writing was something different than what I was reading elsewhere at the time and I was hooked.

Perhaps a forgotten little “event” but my favorite till this day and one I recommend for someone looking for something a bit different.

BATMAN/catwoman #1

(2020)*

Tom King, Clay Mann, Tomeu Morey & Clayton Cowles

*In 2020, the character of It’s Andrea Beaumont—a.k.a. Phantasm was introduced officially in DC Comics. Her first appearance is well known amongst Batman: The Animated Series fans.

Why it makes the list:

To me, my favorite Batman story has to be the story from the animated feature Mask Of The Phantasm. It takes everything that makes Batman: The Animated Series one of the best television shows of all time, and mixes it together with the seriousness and gravitas you’re used to from the comics.

The story is unlike anything else the series had done to that point and gives you one of the best Year One type of stories there ever has been that isn’t named Year One.

It also gives you one of the best new villains of the last 30+ years, plus it gives you one of the best Joker performances of all time. It stands on its own, and it will stand the test of time for how great it is.

BATMAN #608-619 (2002)

Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair, Richard Starkings & Jimmy Betancourt

The world of Bruce Wayne is rocked when a childhood friend returns underneath the cloud of smoke and mirrors.

Why it makes the list:

It gave Batman an new rogue with a personal edge that was the perfect foil to Bruce/Batman.

Plus you can never go wrong with Jim Lee on interiors for any series, esp. with this rogue gallery.

The initial story was a gamble but worked to create a newfound look at the world of the Dark Knight

Why it makes the list:

absolute batman #1-6 (2024-2025)

Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin & Clayton Cowles

A new era begins as the events of DC All In create a dark version of the DC Universe known as the Absolute Universe. Under the eyes of Darkseid, versions of familiar heroes are distorted to adapt to the new world.

In the case of Bruce Wayne, forget all you’ve known before. This is not the same Dark Knight that has been around for 80+ years. The figure that stands before readers is a whole breed of vigilante all his own.

Why it makes the list:

This series defines what an event is all about. Absolute Batman came into comic shops with great hype behind it. From the SDCC 2024 announcement to right before the release, many wondered how this would go over.

The result transcended comics. Sellouts everywhere. Breaking through to pop culture in a way last seen by The Walking Dead perhaps? It continues to push sales and raise other titles attention by bringing in fans to read this imaginative tale.

The first arc shows how vastly different this Bruce Wayne is. No money. No extensive training. Just sheer will and a challenged code of justice. The rogues have all been repackaged as something new and exciting. Snyder and Dragotta take huge gambles every issue.

It has literally changed the way we look at the Caped Crusader and for new fans, it has become their benchmark. There is no escaping this series. It is THE event that has defined Batman for years to come.
