*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This chapter rolls out with an alternate look at the extreme fighting team. The Starguard Youngblood division takes center stage as talks of peace become tense. Much like any political negotiation, the dialogue is very back and forth. It becomes quickly interrupted when The KEEP arrive. Readers watch as their attention leaves the Starguard for a much larger prize. At this stage, the story picks up on the Xerxes timeline with a quicker pace.

Readers watch as the Badrock retaliation takes over. It is nothing short of non-stop action here. This is as vintage Youngblood as it gets. There’s a fair share of competitors vying for a piece of the powerful antagonist. The writing makes Xerxes seem unstoppable. There are a few moments of combat that jump out to exemplify this. This builds up to a more calm final act. With so many moving characters, Liefeld juggles around page time to tie up loose ends before stopping the show. Long time YB fans will love seeing who officially crashes the party here. The final page cements how events have gone form bad to worse. How this plays out is completely up in the air.

As far as the art goes, It’s Liefeld doing what he does best. The Starguard opens with a sense of tension boiling over. Watching Cougar play peacekeeper, it’ easy to see the struggle in working with the conflicting personalities. This gives way to The Keep’s debut. Panels make this such a huge moment. Even an “Insignificant” panel weighs heavy on the page. Watching the transition to Earth only throws more onto the fire waiting to explode.

A full page shot of a victorious Xerxes sets up the next rounds of action. His psychotic smile welcomes his latest challenge in Coral. The punches fly as readers see the next competitor primed and ready via a two page spread. Badrock’s revenge gets bloody fast. While brief, it becomes a pace setter for next flurry of fighting. Readers know how this is gonna go down: fast, violent and unapologetic. The smoke finally clears with a half page of Bravo providing a stop point for the last round. While the fighting ends, this allows a familiar face enter the conflict properly. This moves events into a proper set-up for the final page. A full shot of what’s arrive sends the story into a new direction. Get ready.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Who can stop the path of destruction Xerxes is leaving in his quest? Liefeld jam-packs this issue with many contenders bringing their A-game. The result is a solid script handling the fights and upcoming problems. Nothing but excitement in the panels once the first blow is thrown. There’s a reason this return is making the noise that it does! Check it out!
