The Story
Steve Foxe continues the fantastic start from issue #1 with a strong follow up issue. It works especially well after having seen the first three episodes from season 2 last week on Disney+! So let’s get into it!
The story picks up with Jubilee & Sunspot training with Psylocke training in preparation for joining Cable’s new team, X-Force. He has a plan for defeating Apocalypse that seems like it might be a bit of a reach, but it’s the best they’ve got right now. I really did like the X-Force portion of the issue as it gave us a nice view into how things are progressing, and peeling the curtain back on what exactly Cable has in mind.
The other side of the story takes place in 3960 AD with Cyclops, Jean and Nathan. They’re fighting for survival, all the while trying to get back to their own time. And overall the story in the issue is a great one that feels like it was taken directly out of season 2 on Disney+. I definitely recommend watching the first 3 episodes of Season 2 before you read this issue, because it does add a sense of familiarity to what you’re reading.
The issue ends much in the same way an episode of the series does when it’s still early in the season. A sense of anticipation, a sense of sadness at the way things played out in the way you don’t want them to, and an overall excitement for the next issue.
The Artwork
Salva Espin & Matt Milla are in charge of the artwork for this issue and they both continue their fantastic work at capturing the look from the animated series. Their ability to capture the look and feel of the classic series is simply spectacular and helps make the readability increase that much more.
Overall Grade: 8/10
A great second intro into the series that continues to exceed expectations. A story that feels straight out of the animated classic, together with artwork that is stunning make this an issue you don’t want to miss.
