Web of Venom #1 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the FIRST issue of Web of Venom from Marvel Comics!

This is not the Venom you are familiar with! This is the start of a brand NEW hero wearing a symbiote and it ISN’T Eddie Brock, Peter Parker or Mary Jane. So just who is it? Let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // Web of Venom #1 by Jordan Morris (Writer), Luke Ross & Ramon Rosanas (Artists), David Curiel (Colorist), VC’s Clayton Cowles (Letterer), Stefano Casselli & Federico Blee (Cover) is a very compelling start that has some potential.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

I went into this issue with absolutely no expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. By no means does it upend everything we’ve ever known about symbiotes, and it doesn’t try to hard to be a game changing issue. However it does present you with a compelling story with some unlikely faces that could make for some very compelling stories.

Jordan Morris really did a great job with the first issue of the series and it really sets itself apart from the huge story going on in the Spider-Man side of Marvel comics. While yes there is a small bit of this story does tie in to the Death Spiral story, but it is not an integral part of the story. As such the story stands on it’s own in a very unique way.

It’s through the issue’s uniqueness that it really shines because everything about this issue is unexpected. I won’t reveal who is inside the symbiote, but if you asked me to list the top 20 candidates that could be inside I would NOT have guessed this person. What I will say is that this is a NEW symbiote that’s been on Earth for some time now.

The issue also ends on an incredibly strong note that sets up for a very interesting follow up in issue 2. This new symbiote has made a lot of noise and rattled more than one set of cages, and it’s not going to go unnoticed. So it’ll be very interesting to see where this goes and who might get involved.

The Artwork

Luke Ross, Ramon Rosanas & David Curiel did a tremendous job with the artwork in this issue. Particularly with a couple of panels that were a great nod to some very well known Marvel comic covers. They also bring a very unique look to the series with their style. It has a sense of the main Spider-Man comic, but still has enough different to it that it stands out on it’s own.

FINAL POINT: As far as first issue goes, this one is incredibly solid. It’s a unique & compelling story that doesn’t try too hard to tell a story that stands out on it’s own during a very busy time in the Spider-Man story. Together with fantastic artwork, this is an issue you can’t pass up on!

Overall Grade: 7/10
