WRITING:

One of Simone’s best elements of her run on UXM has been the relationship between Gambit and Rogue. Coming off the heels of his possession and exorcism, the mood is very dire. This leads to a much needed break from the team to refocus. In doing this, the writing shows a small glimpse of their fabled love affair in its early phases. These character moments are what makes the X-Men stand out form most. It is especially needed when an old threat returns.

Readers watch as Gaunt’s escape from Graymalkin doesn’t come without strings attached. Her arrival in Louisiana presents an awkward moment of talk with Wolverine. It is one of tense moments as Gaunt lays out her demands. The action doesn’t take long to kick off after this transpires. Its conclusion is more surprising as Gaunt’s response puts the attack on an abrupt halt. This moves events into more calm point to conclude with, leading into more problems to come along the way.

ART & LETTERING:

Frigeri steps in for art duties on this chapter. The opening at Greymalkin shows how fast events turn. Gaunt’s escape is not without some bloodshed. It leads to a discovery of four altered mutants via full page. The image alludes to more to discover as the story pivots to Rogue and Gambit. Taking a stroll into their past gives a solid look into why their bond is so special. The full page image by moonlight cements this portion before moving events back to Haven House.

Wolverine’s best intentions ramp up the anxiousness of Gaunt’s arrival. Their meeting in the park comes across with a terrifying feel as Gaunt slowly proclaims her orders. It sparks the action scenes at a steady pace. Smaller panels work to cram more action onto the pages. Nightcrawler’s “dental check” is a fun pause before Wolverine goes for the kill. This moves tory into a standstill finish. Gaunt’s threat is backed down while the X-Men realize the impact of time in their lives. The final panel speaks to this point before closing up shop.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

There’s no rest for the weary as the X-Men are paid a visit by a dangerous foe! Simone puts a strong emphasis on Rogue and Gambit’s relationship while the X-Men deal with danger. Frigeri and Wilson balance out the action with personal moments. Another great example of how this run captures that Marvel mutant magic!
