UNCANNY X-MEN #24 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson & Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Simone begins with the classic Western tale involving the Outliers. It’s a fun companion piece to the overall plot. Seeing the young mutants become wrapped up in the fantasy is a nice break from the cruel reality of their daily situations. The reaction when zombies are mentioned is priceless as the story moves forward. As with life sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. That is the case with the X-Men’s latest conflict.
Readers watch as the Legion initiates the fight. Rogue’s monologue reflects the various looks being throw. It results in a magical battleground with much at stake. The match-ups work well to provide entertaining brawls. Wolverine vs. Werewolf By Night will be a crowd pleaser. The writing also checks back into a part of Jubilee’s past that we haven’t seen in a while. Her time as a vampire provides a deeper context into the struggles with this fight. It ultimately leads to a strong finish and wilder outcome. On paper, this might not seem to work, but if Gail Simone is writing it, you know it’s gonna win big!
Marquez and Wilson open with the throwback sequence to the Old west. The coloring adds so much to these scenes. It builds to a huge moment via full page. This is matched by the group shot of the Legion Of Monsters. The art team closes in on Rogue’s expressions while processing this fight. Once the story moves locations to an abandoned amusement park, the action starts. Each pairing has a unique look to them but one stands out from the pack.
There’s no question of the brutality going on with Werewolf By Night and Wolverine. Readers watch as the blood starts flying fast. There’s an incredible half panel that brings out the rage. It is a show stopper. From here, the art goes back to Rogue and Elsa Bloodstone. Their face-off covers many ranges. Even when one thinks they have the upper hand, it is clear they do not. This all boils down to a great final page. The full page shot makes it very clear things have gone from bad to worse. Prepare for impact.
FINAL GRADE: 9
The Legion Of Monsters strike fast as the X-Men defend their home turf in this latest chapter. Simone gifts readers with fun match-ups as the teams brawl for it all. Marquez and Wilson don’t hold back on the action. This is the X-Men series you can’t afford to miss in your collection! .
