ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #13 by Chris Condon, Domenico Carbone, Bryan Valenza & Cory Petit (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Condon begins with a look at Magik on the run. The writing shows her dealing with a past flashback It sets a haunting mood to leave her in an unknown state. After losing her brother in the showdown with Grey and Logan, time is not on her side. It also doesn’t look good for Logan’s crew. Impossible missions are nothing new. Knowing the streets are in chaos doesn’t help.

Even in death, Dr. Prostovich’s legacy is still felt. Logan’s dash for saving Grey is met with strong opposition. This stands in the form of Ursa Major. Readers don’t wait long for the blood to start spilling. There is plenty of frenzied action taking place. Knowing Logan does one thing exceptionally well, it comes to no surprise how this goes down. The result leads into a curious finish leading into the final chapter. It is a full circle moment that can only spell more death on the horizon. Mission still isn’t done.

Carbone takes art duties for this chapter. The intro into Magik’s world is fueled with darkness and despair. It leaves a solid impression on what is going down in this landscape. Once back in the present, the covert moves of Wolverine's team takes center stage. The mood is tense with each passing panel. Logan’s trek runs into a major roadblock with deadly consequences.

The use of light and shadows paints a clear picture of what is about to go down. Nothing is held back as the two vicious characters unleash fury. There is plenty of blood spilled with each blow. The near half page break lets the audience catch a second to breathe. Once over, the art speeds up the ferocious action. It is not for the weak stomached, The parting shot ends with a defiant Wolverine standing over a terrifying landscape. From here, the calm aftermath leads to a solid visual looking through broken glass. A stark contrast to the carnage that just wet down. The final panel teases more on the horizon as the clock is ticking louder.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

If you want blood, you got it. A mission for medicine turns into a violent and messy brawl in the wake of a revolution. Condon’s writing unleashes the berzerker rage synonymous with Logan. Carbone and Valenza deliver on a moving murder scene with the unapologetic art. This is what you want out of a Wolverine story! Brace for impact!
