Ultimate Universe: Finale #1 (Marvel Comics)
Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the FIRST issue of Ultimate Universe: Finale from Marvel Comics!
It is time to say goodbye to this version of the Ultimate Universe in a huge way! It’s a 60+ page issue from the entire creative team of each of the main books! I HIGHLY reccomend reading Ultimate Endgame #5 BEFORE you read this issue! Seriously! If you don’t, you’re going to be spoiling some plot points from that issue for yourself! With that said, let’s jump into it!

The Story
It’s hard to believe we’re at the end of the Ultimate Universe as we presently know it. It had some incredibly stories told over the course of it’s run, and even had some incredibly memorable moments as well. However, all good things must come to an end and go out with a bang. So does this issue deliver? Let’s find out!
This issue is HUGE and a little daunting when you first see it and open it up. It’s over 60 pages full of incredible stories, artwork and moments that will make fans of the various titles in this Ultimate universe smile. What Marvel did is they took the creative team from every Ultimate book (Spider-Man, Black Panther, Wolverine, Ultimates & X-Men) and give them the space to send off their stories how they wanted to.
There truly is something in this issue for everyone, no matter if you read the entire run or you perhaps read a couple of issues. Each story ties up each characters story nicely and sets it sailing for the proverbial sunset. I’m not usually a big fan of finales like this but I really enjoyed how this one played out.
It’s incredibly interesting to see this one play out, because while the future is unknown for these characters it is written with a possible future in the cards. Of course that is incredibly obvious when it comes to when you get to the final couple of pages of the issue. I had a feeling it would play out the way it does, and it’s going to be interesting to see where things go. I won’t spoil things, you should know that from me by now. However I will reiterate we don’t know the future of these characters, and as far as we know there isn’t any plans for a Secret War type event to bring them over to the mainline 616.
The Artwork
The list of folks who did the artwork for this issue is incredibly long, but they all did a fantastic job bringing their absolute best to the table with this issue. Each story felt like a love letter to the work they had done on their respective series. Each story retains the familiar look of each and is some of the best artwork of those series runs. If you’re going to read one issue this week, the artwork in this issue makes a strong contender for your consideration.
Overall Grade: 10/10
An incredible sendoff with an incredible issue that has something for everyone. The entire creative team behind the Ultimate universe really put their time, effort & love into this issue and it is very evident. If you read one issue this week, you should make it this issue.
