The Story
Deniz Camp does an incredible job with the story in the issue because after the shocking conclusion to the first issue, you knew he had to come out firing on all cylinders and continue the momentum. Iron Lad, Spider-Man, Doom & America Chavez are trapped inside The City with none other than Howard Stark.
The bulk of the story is our heroes catching up with Howard Stark, and just how exactly he’s been surviving this whole time. Time & space operate in a whole different way in The City than it does in the real world, so A LOT of time has passed since Howard has been trapped inside. The biggest takeaway is that ultimately Howards plan isn’t going to delay The Maker forever, and that eventually he will get out. However the plan is to kill The Maker before that time comes to pass.
I really enjoyed the way Deniz was able to raise the stakes and increase the pressure with just what the heroes were setting out to do. There have been a lot of universe threatening events in comic history, but this one feels different from those. This one has a feel of, maybe the good guys aren’t going to win. The mystery & intrigue with what is going to happen to this whole universe is so fascinating.
Deniz also adds a wrinkle into things with Wakanda getting involved, and I’m sure that’s going to throw things into even more chaos than they already are. Will it ultimately make a difference? Oh more than likely, but whether it plays out for good or negative results remains to be seen. I get the feeling it won’t help matters, but rather hinder them.
There’s also the wrinkle of the ending. Which I have to say surprised me a little, but not completely. I won’t spoil what it is that happens, because as always I feel that you need to read it for yourself. I was surprised that the moment happened, but I wasn’t surprised at who it was that did it. If anyone was going to be put in that position, the one shown there makes the most sense.
The Artwork
The entire creative team did a fantastic job with the art in this issue and it really does an incredible job elevating the story and giving it the feel of a big comic book event. There are moments when you’re reading the panels and it looks a little bit gruesome but that isn’t a bad thing! It adds to the grit and feel of the comic. This isn’t going to be a happy go lucky story from days gone by, and the artwork is the driving force behind that feel.
FINAL POINT: Deniz Camp pens an absolute masterpiece, while adding wrinkles to a story that feels larger than the universe it’s set in. Together with artwork that continues to stun & impress, this is a series that you do NOT want to pass up reading!
Overall Grade: 9/10
