The Witcher: Blood Stone #2 (Dark Horse Comics)
Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 2nd issue of The Witcher: Blood Stone from Dark Horse Comics!
Geralts journeys have lead him to some interesting places, but perhaps none as mysterious as the town of Plinth. Mysterious attacks, and a mystery that cannot be explained. Will Geralt be able to solve the mystery, or will he be in over his head? Let’s jump into it!
Credit: Dark Horse Comics // The Witcher: Blood Stone #2 by Daniel Freedman (Writer), Pius Bak (Art & Cover), Roman Titov (Colors), Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Letters) is a great entry in the series, that builds off the strong start of issue #1.
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
The Story
Daniel Freedman builds off the incredible start from the last issue into this one when it picks up right where things left off! I really liked the way the issue continued the mystery and story so seamlessly.
I also really like how things continue to play out in such a natural way. If you’ve read the books, played the games or watched any of the series on Netflix, this story has such a flow to it that feels like an entry into any one of those. I also really like how chaotic things get partway through the issue. Geralt is the only person there equipped enough to deal with what’s going on, even if he doesn’t fully understand what’s going on, and as such he’s needed in multiple places at the same time. It helped keep the issue intriguing and changed up the pace in a way that was really fun to read.
The ending is really fun to read as well, because it takes a turn that I had a feeling was coming. As such it should make for a very compelling third issue. As I’ve said before, this is only going to be a 4 issue series, so there is no time to play around and Freedman is not playing around!
The Artwork
Pius Bak & Roman Titov continue to do a spectacular job with the artwork. The art style is not like any of the stuff I usually read, and would not initially intrigue me to check it out. However it’s done in such a way that feels familiar, and captures some of the essence of Geralt and The Witcher universe in it’s many incarnations.
FINAL POINT: As far as first issues go, this one is a fantastic one. It’s got a tremendous story that’s easy to jump into, even if you’re not a huge Witcher fan. Also the artwork is so spectacular it enhances the reading experience exponentially. This is a series you can’t miss!
Overall Grade: 9/10
