THE DIGGER #2 (INVADER COMICS)

Ignorance is Bliss in most cases. In others, it’s the difference between life and death.

In the 1930’s in Veracruz, Mexico, locals make money serving as guides to those traveling through. “The Boy” is a young upstart who’s desperately trying to secure funds for his sick grandmother. He takes a job others run and hide from.

No one wants to be around “El Excavador” and his reputation. Helping his grandmother puts blinders on his judgement. Hopefully, it won’t cost him his life.

THE DIGGER #2 by T. S. Luther & Sam Gudilin (Invader Comics) continues its brooding mystery in its’ latest installment.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the next phase of the story.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Luther puts events in motion with a trip to the museum. A business conversation draws out the tentative nature of the matter. Readers watch as the shaky attempt of recruiting gets overtaken by a sense of anger to spark a choice. It’s enough of a lead-in to ponder before the Boy’s journey resumes. The dialogue leans heavily into the optimism of his mission. It hides any sense of doubt as they progress further on their destined path, It does not come without its’ fare share of issues.

A small roadblock leads into a glimpse of tough upbringing. It is brief but effective in showcasing future skills as the uneasy deal continues. Readers can sense the tension hold strong over pages. This comes to the forefront when trouble arrives. If anyone was doubting the legacy of “El Excavador”, Luther leaves nothing off the table in demonstrating it. There’s a few curves thrown into play as the conflict rises. It caps off with a frightening realization. This moment of fear cements the weight of events while concluding this round. The epilogue teases more of the hidden past which can only spell disaster in the current timeline. An impressive trip never the less.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!

Gudilin opens with a look into the past. The panels hint at a scene right from a horror film. Once it returns to the present, a full page shot of the gala takes hold. Smith’s conversation runs through a course of different looks. It caps off with a strong look at Smith’s choice involving a proposition. This feeling gives way to a superb two page spread of Excavador and the Boy traveling. Their expressions show the determination of accomplishing this goal, no matter the cost. This is capped off by a great full page image (which also doubles for the main cover).

The flashback sequences pop with the blue coloring. It connects with readers as the images try forging a bridge of relatability. The calm point gives way to some brutal action scenes. There’ nothing fair about this fight. Readers watch as the violence seems to keep rising. Panels never shy away from the extreme moments. It dives heavily into them to cement what the mysterious stranger is capable of. The fallout spins into a series of full shots that demonstrate the horrors at hand. A fill final image concludes events on solid ground with many questions behind it. The epilogue begins with a great two page spread, capped off by a fantastic full shot. The art definitely holds steady for another round.

FINAL GRADE: 9

No fears of a sophomore slump in this chapter. Luther’s writing dances between heavy drama and barbaric combat. Gudilin gives the pages a style all its’ own with the unique looks on each page. This series is living up to the hype it’s been making. Don’t miss out!
