THE DEADMAN #5 by W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, Chris O'Halloran, & Good Old Neon (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Prince is fearless in where he takes this story. Placing Brand in a futuristic setting considering where he’s been is par for the course. Seeing the interaction with the robotic Swamp thing proves insightful while teasing the curious notions. Once their meeting puts more perspective in place, another classic DC hero makes their entrance. It is only fitting this character shows up considering the subject matter, albeit with a twist.

Readers get “The Photon Stranger” to address life in this new world. The dialogue nails the uneasiness of Mr. M’s moves while pushing Brand into a very uncomfortable place. Being Human again allows certain interactions to work. Factor in more devilish actions, Readers watch as Brand winds up in a new surrounding where little hope lies. This pushes him into more unsettled places for the close. A wild trip that continues to challenge beliefs gets more deeper in thought.

Morazzo & O'Halloran don’t break from their current model of panels often. Gr33n’s initial interactions clash with Brand’s stature. It moves very easily to where the story dictates. A full page shows a variety of panels while dealing with souls. Readers watch as it exposes Mr. M’s moves while crafting a dark detour for Brand. The stunning full shot of purgatory cements some answers while Stranger comes into view.

The art goes for larger panels when on page for Stranger. This illustrates his impact as he discusses life in this aspect. The future landscape is steady based off other pop culture themes. It lets the heroes of this world get some valued page time. This also sets up a major confrontation for Brand. Once here, the simple uses of colors and dark tones gives more gravity to his situation. This leads to a steady finish line with a chilling full page waiting. Always expect the unexpected here.

FINAL GRADE: 8.4

The future of Boston Brand is anything but linear as the Gr33n offers an assist. Prince continues to push boundaries with the writing. Morazzo & O'Halloran craft unforgettable looks while moving Brand thought the unknown. A story unlike anything else at the shops keeps its’ winning ways.
