Kirkman and Casey present a very fascinating look at belief and power with this initial chapter. The opening stages tease a strange force invading a man’s life. Passing the grotesque eyeball scene, the story shifts to a more familiar stage. Two powered people fighting each other is par for the course. In this instance, the writing shows the extreme measures taken to secure victory. From here, Marilyn’s search commences its destined path.

Readers witness her search take many dangerous twists. It does lead to the intended destination but not before a fast action sequence. As Marilyn sees her sister’s new life, the writing sinks its’ teeth into the world building. The dialogue exposes the new world with enigmatic flair. Alessandra’s talk with Marilyn sees glimpses of blind hope while being sold a dream.This build keeps the audience guessing till its’ time to reveal the hand. The writing duo throw a major curve ball into play as Marilyn makes her choice. This creates an uneasy fallout and more puzzling last page. A very solid way to keep everyone guessing what’s next as this world expands.

Kubert brings a kinetic energy to the pages as the mystery begins. The opening sequence with Theed rapidly morphs into an uncomfortable place. The full page scene with the eye bulging makes a bold statement. Readers watch as the story transition to current time with a bloody exchange. Imp’s killing of Blaster crafts the dangerous nature of the fight. Marilyn’s quest for her sister brings her into direct contact with Imp. Their exchange is brief before another player enters the game.

Alessandra’s arrival leads to more sound action. Knowing Kubert’s reputation, this was a no-brainer to see unfold. The brief skirmish opens up the door to the truth, or so one would believe. Theed’s island is as perfect as you want it to look. Everyone’s reactions (minus Marilyn’s) are very stoic and never break. Readers watch as this look fades when Maculox’ aka “the higher power” arrives via full pages. The art sneaks in some personal moments before the choice is made. A pair of stunning full pages elude to the true nature of Maculox’s plans. This spirals into the closing act. A chilling full page image brings in another player with a bleak statement to wrap events up with.

Marilyn Howe’s search for her sister opens her eyes to a dangerous new world in this exciting debut. Kirkman and Carey challenge the readers on the balance of good and evil. Kubert and McCaig impress with incredible visuals that elevate the complex story. This brutal & intense mystery is about to become your new favorite series!
