STAR TREK #2 by Christopher Cantwell, Dennis Menheere &Jodie Troutman (IDW PUBLISHING - ON SALE NOV. 18TH, FOC: OCT. 12TH)
Star Trek #2 definitely took the story in a direction I wasn’t expecting. Once again, there is a lot going on in this issue. More importantly, we now have a pretty clear idea of who the current antagonist is, but whether they’re actually the villain is still a very different question.
Jack Crusher really stood out to me in this issue. His head isn’t completely in the game, and he’s clearly trying to work through everything happening around him. He crosses a line, and it’s definitely a line that comes pretty close to being uncrossable, but I don’t think the story has completely closed the door on him coming back from it.
Seven is still struggling with her role as captain, and now she has to deal with her own crew questioning her decisions. On top of that, she’s clearly missing her partner, which adds another personal layer to everything she’s dealing with.
MORE STAR TREK FROM IDW!
The story itself is definitely more complicated, darker, and more mind-twisting than the first issue. The ships assigned to this mission are all under pressure and essentially on the clock to perform, which creates this constant sense that something could go wrong at any moment.
And this is where the issue really feels like Star Trek to me. We get difficult moral choices, Starfleet ideals, and that sense of duty and chain of command that crews are expected to follow even when they’re put into seemingly impossible situations.
Visually, the issue continues the same style established in the first issue, so there wasn’t anything that particularly surprised me from an art standpoint. But the artwork continues to fit the story and its darker tone.
By the end, I was definitely interested in learning more about the antagonist and seeing how this mission continues to unfold. I’m especially curious to see how the various captains including Seven react as the pressure continues to build.
FINAL GRADE: 8
For Star Trek #2, There’s a lot to take in here, but ultimately, I finished the issue wanting to know where this story is going next. For a Star Trek comic, this is exactly what I want.
