Spider-Man Noir #5 (Marvel comics)
Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I’m going to be reviewing the 5th issue of Spider-Man Noir from Marvel Comics!
Set in a universe separate from the Peter Parker & Marvel Universe we all are familiar with. This universe has a familiar feel to things but is putting a very interesting spin on things! Peter is a Private Eye & has been on the case of finding out who killed Gwen Stacy’s father! After a series of twists, Peter is now dealing with the fact that he doesn’t have his powers! Just how will he solve this? Let’s jump into it!
Credit: Marvel Comics// Spider-Man #5 by Erik Larsen (Writer), Andrea Broccardo (Artist), Rachelle Rosenberg (Color Artist), VC’s Joe Sabino (Letterer) & Simone Di Meo (Cover) is a great conclusion to the series, that leaves the door open for more.
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
The Story
This issue really surprised me with the path it took, as there were a couple of twists I did not see coming. What those twists are, I won’t say because I maintain you need to experience them for yourself. However, I will say that considering who the twists involve and what they are did. This is a character that to the best of my knowledge has always been shown in a very positive light, so to see this twist on that was a very interesting spin.
The issue plays out in brilliant fashion, with an epic battle that is worthy of the Spider-Man name in every way. However the most interesting part is how it ends. It feels like the closing of a book for this iteration of Peter Parker, but I can’t help but feel this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him. It feels like perhaps there’s something bigger in store for him down the road at some point and that we’ll see him again in the near future. Perhaps in the next big Spider-Man event? Who knows, but I for one would love to see more of this iteration of Spider-Man at the comic shop.
It’s an issue, and a series, that does a fantastic job at transporting you to a different time and era so effortlessly. Erik Larsen penned a fantastic story that is unlike anything we’ve seen from Spider-Man in recent years, and it’s one of the best ones Marvel has done.
The Artwork
Andrea Broccardo & Rachelle Rosenberg are on the artwork for the issue again, and their fantastic work with the art continues. The fact that they were able to bring the 1930’s to life in such a unique way is astonishing. The artwork is truly some of the best you’ll see on the comic stands this week. It has such a classic feel to it that I feel like I’m looking at still images from a film on Turner Classic Movies.
FINAL POINT: Erik Larsen pens one of the best Spider-Man stories in years, and it’s one you don’t want to skip. Together with artwork that is out of this world incredible, it’s an issue that is cannot miss.
FINAL GRADE: 8.0/10
