Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #3 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 3rd issue of The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn from Marvel Comics!

Peter Parker is still in college in this series, and is trying to navigate balancing his regular life with his superhero one. All the while he tries to balance his love life between Gwen Stacy & Mary Jane! Just how does he do it? Let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #3 by J. Michael Straczynski (Writer), Pere Perez (Artist), Guru e-FX (Color Artist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (Letterer), Greg Land & Rachelle Rosenberg (Cover Artists) is an intriguing issue that sets up for a mysterious future.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

The issue is an interesting one, because it feels like a transitional one from where the series started into where it’s going. Telling a story set in the past is always an interesting one because on the one hand you know where things are going to end up, but a lot of the time they try to leave enough wiggle room to have some freedom with the story.

After a fight with Evangeline, who’s been turned into a bat like creature, it moves on to switch between what is going with both Peter & Evangeline. Evangeline’s story, while interesting and compelling, isn’t 100% clear just yet. I’m interested to see where it goes though, because whoever (or whatever) it is she ends up speaking to could end up being very interesting.

Peter’s side of the story is a little more heartfelt, he’s trying to figure out his love life. It touches on a lot of the familiar topics long time readers of Spider-Man should be familiar with. It works really well, but as it’s a prequel story…we know how it’s going to end up.

The Artwork

Pere Perez & Guru e-FX really did a great job with the art in this issue, and continue to give it a modern look but still maintain a classic feel that you’d get from reading a story set during Peter’s college days. The panels with Evangeline in the later pages of the issue were particularly spectacular.

FINAL POINT: It’s a solid issue that has some heartfelt moments that fans are sure to enjoy, and the artwork is spectacular. It was just missing something impactful to make it truly memorable.

Overall Grade: 7/10
