The Story
When this series was first announced I was extremely excited to read it. I grew up on the series and it was one that I loved from start to finish. I just wasn’t sure if the same magic the television series had could be captured in this continuation all these years later. Boy was I wrong in every way possible.
The issue features the climatic battle between Spider-Man & Kraven vs Morlun vs Kaine, and man does it deliver. This issue felt like one of the episodes that finished off the climactic multi-episode stories that are so well known from the animated series. It has some of the familiar beats and points you would see from the climax of the story being told across the episodes and that just enhances the overall experience.
The end of the battle might not deliver for some readers, but it did for me. It had such a feeling of a Saturday morning cartoon that it made perfect sense to me. What delivers most though is how the issue ends, because oh my gosh it is as perfect an ending as you can get. Everything is tied up in a nice little bow and packaged beautifully that you can’t help but smile and feel really good about for Peter in this universe. He’s been through A LOT and to see him finally get some happiness is the absolute best.
The Artwork
Jim Towe & Jim Campbell really are the perfect pair for the artwork for this series. The way they were able to capture the look & feel of the animated series is nothing short of breathtaking. The way they blended in new characters with ones we already know is nothing short of astounding. Plus they do a great job with the backgrounds and capturing that same look from the series. If you only end up reading one continuation comic series of a beloved 90s cartoon the artwork on this one is sure to be a selling point.
FINAL POINT: It’s a great issue that captures the look, feel & spirit of the animated series in such a way that it feels like you’re reading an unused script from the series. A gripping story & breathtaking art really elevate the story and make this one you cannot miss.
Overall Grade: 9/10
