STORY OVERVIEW:

It’s Romeo & Juliet with Godzilla…LITERALLY!

WRITING:

This one-shot does an amazing job of taking a legendary play and making it more fun with the addition of the King of the Monsters. Adam Tierney stays completely true to the source material, well adding some awesome entertainment value with the addition of Godzilla. Tierney’s choice to use a lot of the actual dialogue from Romeo & Juliet gives the story its authenticity. Everyone knows the story and that familiarity helps this book not waste any time. The real genius of the writing is sprinkling Godzilla in the key scenes of the story. It’s not overdone, well still being consistently in the background throughout. There are a few story choices that make the reader scratch their head. But overall, the story delivers exactly what it needs to.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this book captures the time period and the age of the story perfectly. Sean Peacock makes the art look very Shakespearean, which enhances the story as well as brings it to life. The design of Godzilla is cool and fits in with the period completely. Peacock’s character designs are very cool and look the part. One of the strongest pieces of art in the book is a surprise appearance of a Medieval Mechagodzilla. The way Peacock designed Mechagodzilla effectively situates him within the era, demonstrating thoughtful and appropriate design choices. The color pallet matches the time frame the artwork is geared toward, making the pages feel old.

Final Thoughts:

Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre: Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla #1 is a fun and entertaining take on the classic story. The writing stays true to the original, well adding some fun moments with everyone’s favorite Kaiju. The artwork is an amazing period piece that transports the reader back in time. If you like Shakespeare, Godzilla, fun stories, or all of the above, pick up a copy when you visit the LCS this week!
