POWER RANGERS PRIME #14 by Melissa Flores, Federico Sorressa, Joana Lafuente & Ed Dukeshire (BOOM! Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Flores opens with a look back at Orion’s encounter with a cloaked figure. Once the dream state concludes, the Pink Ranger is shaken by the visions witnessed. The writing carries this uneasiness to his next destination. Working with Rita Repulsa is always a gamble. Their dialogue shows promise as Orion attempts to learn Magic. The peaceful mentorship is a far cry from where Lauren and Val are currently in.

Readers watch as the pair comes face to face with the cloaked figure. The action is fast as a new Red Ranger emerges in this chaos. Once cooler heads prevail, their identity is a surprise to fans. From one reunion to another, Jun’s return sparks a heated conversation with his mother. Knowing how the maneuvering has been, it is no surprise to the emotions involved. Both voices are cut of when a larger threat enters frame. The writing gives it a major debut with its’ impact. The debut is so forceful, it takes over the closing pages. Once some Rangers get ready to fight, another figure steps into view. Their appearance is anything but a coincidence. It’s a great cliffhanger to tide fans over till next round.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Sorressa and Lafuente lock in on Andresia with a cold air of tension. Orion’s brief fight hits the key points before snapping back to present time. His meeting with Rita showcases the work in Magic with potential for danger. The images take a more serious turn with Val and Lauren. Once the cloaked figure appears, the action picks up. The panels are brief but effective in selling its’ case. Once past time point, the story spotlights a few family reunions.

Jayden and Jun have returns that differ in warmth. Jayden’s family embraces with open arms. Readers can sense the joy in having him return. Jun’s talk with his mother is more frank and emotionless. There isn’t too much time to dwell on this. A two page splash welcomes in the monstrous adversary. Seeing the destruction in its’ wake makes a huge statement. As events roll to the final pages, the mood of dread never leaves. It builds up to the final page. A full image conveys the danger and another surprise on the way. Very solid work on this go around.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

The power of Family may not be fast or furious enough to handle the latest threat to these Rangers. Flores’s writing hits on the key emotional pulls of family struggles. Sorressa and Lafuente shine while bringing the new adversary into clear focus. This series is making waves that you shouldn’t pass on for NCBD!
