PLANET SHE-HULK #4 (MARVEL COMICS)

Say it ain’t so!

Jack of Hearts is back?! Korven Blackjaw has dug deep to take his attack to Jen Walters. After his bride was murdered, Korven took action and proclaimed himself as the planet’s new king. With Quade’s trial fast approaching, Jack is working for Korven on prosecuting his rival for the fate of Sakaar. All’s fair in love and trail, right?

PLANET SHE-HULK #4 by Stephanie Phillips, Emilio Laiso, Fabi Marques, & Joe Caramagna (MARVEL COMICS) brings the drama in its latest chapter.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what is going down now.

PLANET SHE-HULK #4 by Stephanie Phillips, Emilio Laiso, Fabi Marques, & Joe Caramagna (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Phillips adds a quick flashback to happier times to open up this chapter. The good times quickly fade as the brief action begins. Readers watch as the teaser of combat leads into a vulnerable look at Jen processing all this. It is an awkward spot to see Jen land but understandable with Korven’s personal attack. The dialogue with Juno gives some inspiration at how things can only be better. While brief, the glimmer of hop is just enough to move things forward.

Pacing picks up as Jen meets with Quade. The “Lawyer/Client” time proves eventful before “Court” begins. Once here, readers watch as the pleasantries are over. The fight begins with more weight behind it. Readers will get their money’s worth for this face-off. It hits its’ key points before coming to a conclusion. What won’t be expected is the final pages. Phillips throws in a huge shift in direction, leaving many questions for readers till next time.

Laiso & Marques open with a two page spread of the former lovers facing off. It teases enough for the second round later in the chapter. Korven’s smarminess is met with Jen’s rising anger. This moment spins into Jen letting out her frustration. The art doesn’t hide her compounding emotions. It serves as a solid lead into more action, but not before one more talk.

Quade’s painful backstory comes into focus. This is enough fuel for Jen to take up the fight. His mannerisms explain the tragic past and dwindling future. Once the action starts, the art team hits pages pretty heavy with the escalading fight. Once the smoke clears, readers aren’t ready for what’s next. The final full page throws a huge curve into play as the story takes a monster twist. Curious to see how this is going to play out now.

FINAL GRADE: 8.2

Jen Walters can handle most situations but can she deal with a returning lover? Phillips brings out many different sides of She-Hulk with the writing. The art team hit their high notes as the lovers quarrel takes hold. The last page will have readers talking as all bets are off from here.
