Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest.
NEW TITANS #36 by Tate Brombal, Marcus To, Adriano Lucas & Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Brombal plays into the quirkiness of the new dynamics. None seem more out place than Eva. Her mannerisms conflict with the others in a playful fashion. It leads to some enjoyable clashes as the struggle for pickleball is very strong. This leads some of the team to venture out as a “bonding” experience. Per usual, any casual time out proves to be anything but that. The new team stumbles upon a larger threat than expected with more hijinx coming.
The more impactful points of the chapter belong to Starfire and Cyborg. Both long standing Titans have gone through much changes since the events of the tourney. Readers watch as one makes a startling decision about their future. The dialogue is on point as the airing of grievances takes hold. As for the other half, the writing pushes other members into the path of their new side plot. It leaves much in question as a large threat comes into view. A very steady issue setting up more to deal with in the upcoming series.

To and Lucas open with a full page of Eva being tested. The dream state provides some clues into what she is experiencing. Even with Cyborg’s help, there are much uncertainties in the panels. It leads to more candid shots of the team members adjusting to their surroundings. Batgirl gets a full page of her latest training seminar. Readers watch as this gets interrupted by Eva looking for a game partner. Following panels carry the same energy until it’s time to head into town.
Readers watch as the other key players get to handle more heavier drama. Nightwing’s talk with Starfire is one of deep rooted feelings. The panels catch both prying into the other. It leaves both with a few questions in the distance. The closing invokes an awkward pairing as more scheming is discovered. Seeing Terra involved always makes for the ability to go off the rails fast. This is no exception. Her latest troubles come in a monster way. The full page close leaves quite the impression as the Titans find out there’s no place like home.
FINAL GRADE: 8
New Home, Same Ol’ Titans drama. Brombal presents a steady Titans story with all the drama. The art teams shine locks in on the key segments to hit the emotional cues. Where this is going to go from here is very much to be determined.
