LOGAN: BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD #4 by Ethan Sacks, Garry Brown, Andres Mossa, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Piotr Kowalski, Rachelle Rosenberg & Cory Petit (MARVEL COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
The issue is a compilation of three stories. Due to the amount, the overview of each tale will be shorter than usual reviews.
“The Monster in the Dark” by Sacks, Brown, Mossa, & Petitthrows Logan in Quebec 1913. He stumbles upon a town scared by a monster in the woods. As he investigates, he finds something that is really k*lling the children. Sacks brings out the terror in the writing. When the being tries creating a bond with Logan, it doesn’t go in his favor. Readers watch as Logan hones in on doing what is necessary. It leads to a solid close and even better epilogue. One of the better ending in this series’ run.
Brown and Mossa deliver on the harsh elements of this time period. The half view of Logan emerging from the darkness makes a statement. This leads right into his pained look once he realizes who the victims are. The creature gets a horrifying panel entrance. It is responded with fast paced action. Readers see Logan unleashed to a vicious finish. The epilogue page locks in on the narrator’s broken memoires with a great final panel. Very steady visuals throughout.
“Kintsugi” by Camuncoli& Petit takes Wolverine back to Madripoor! When an ancient mask is stolen, Logan attempts to retrieve it before an evil is unleashed. Camuncoli is on writing and art duties here. The opening shot of a ninja jumping Wolverine leads to fast action and a great reveal. The co-star on this trip is perfect in this story. Logan’s pleas fall on deaf ears as the mask is activated. A great full page brings this moment to life.
What follows is a very trippy fight sequence. The panels show a certain shifter going through the many personas of Wolverine. It spirals into more wild brawling. Fans want to see Logan unleashed get their money’s worth. The fight ends on a more sudden strike than expected. This leads to a calm finish and more tension floating in the air. From start to end, this story checked every box needed for a classic Wolvie tale.
“End of Days” by Kennedy Johnson, Kowalski, Rosenberg& Petit puts Wolverine in the very far future. Earth is a shell of itself. Aliens are ravaging for anything of value. There are many remains form the past. Kennedy Johnson stages this with much mystery behind it. There are some slight remains form a time forgotten. One of which is Logan at the end of his line. The writing sets up events with nothing more than fading memoires behind it. Even as Wolverine attacks, it feels as a lost cause. Events wrap up as fast as they exploded with Logan.
Kowalski & Rosenberg take ample time to create the desolate landscape. Logan doesn’t appear till halfway in the story. The panels prior show the devastation that has ensued. Broken sentinels are abound as the aliens search the planet. Once he is discovered, its back to basics. Readers watch as he takes on his predators with bad intentions. There is no holding back on what he is bringing. The moment ends on a somber look. It serves as a true reflection on Logans’ mind as the physical world ends.
FINAL GRADE: 8.6
Logan’s last ride goes out swinging with a violent close in this final chapter. Each team locks in on Logan’s rage to guide his journeys. “Kintsugi” proves to be the standout work of the book. A fitting journey into the world of violence that is defined by one word: Logan.
