STORY OVERVIEW:
Hudson Hill brings us up to speed on what is going on in the world. Basically, everyone on Earth found out God and the Devil are real. But worse than that now they have left humanity to itself and want nothing to do with it. This has created a world where no one cares anymore, creating a very hopeless and dangerous world. Hudson a young man was shown a vision of how the world will actually end. Because of this vision Hudson was on a mission to find Spawn. However, Spawn appears to be dead, and this sends him on to another man, Karl Kruger. Can Hudson find Karl and figure out why he’s so important? Or will he be visited by a ghost and all is for nothing?
WRITING:
This first issue of this new arc gives the reader enough information to start the story. But keeps enough in the dark to hook the readers’ interest in following the series. Matthew Rosenberg has crafted this very different and dark story that makes you think about what is actually going on. As the world feels helpless, so doesn’t the mission of this young man. That sense of hopelessness creates a unique atmosphere within the story. It makes you ponder whether the world is even worth being saved in general. This sense of despair makes for the perfect backdrop for what will be a long form story between two different series. The intricacies Rosenberg introduces in this issue will surely hook readers that love complex storytelling.
ARTWORK:
The artwork in this issue matches the desolate story perfectly and really shows the reader how depressed this world truly is. Thomas Nachlik shows a very gritty and hopeless world, where there is no sign of improvement. The city looks rundown and the people in it almost feel like zombies. Nachlik’s artwork will really resonate with readers and will make it easy to pick up what the story is actually laying down. The color pallet that Ivan Nunes chose for this issue further drives home the desolate feeling. A lot of dark colors and almost no bright colors show what the mood of this world is. The art team nails the aesthetic of this first issue of the arc.
