STORY OVERVIEW:

Two people have been brutally murdered, and a mysterious man has showed up at the scene of the crime. He discovers that his calling card has been left on the wall, even though he just showed up. Soon the real killer reveals himself and lets Killroy know that he knows exactly who he is. Killroy realizes that the killer is an angel named Barbatos and this really confuses him to why he killed this couple. Killroy visits Barbatos twin angel and that’s where he’s told about the fallen. He is offered new powers if he fights on the side of the angels in this war, to which he agrees. However, after tracking down Barbatos he finds out that things are more complicated than what he initially thought.

WRITING:

The first issue of this series does a great job of kicking off the series. Joe Pruett gives the reader just enough of the story that he hooks them, well keeping most of what’s going on in the shadows. The mysterious nature of the story builds suspense and intrigue. This forces the reader to speculate on what’s actually going, which makes for an amazing air of intrigue. Pruett also delivers on the violence in this book as well. The killing scenes are disturbing, but not so much so that it makes the reader want to look away.

However, at the same time the lack of revealing a bit more does lead to a bit of confusion. Not enough that it takes the reader out, but enough to somewhat be annoying. This is not a major detraction as it is apparent that all will be revealed, and this is just a slow burn open.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this first issue puts the reader directly into the world of Killroy. Dalibor Talajić takes the reader deep inside of this dark world and immerses their senses with the artwork in this book. The art fits the mood and tone of the story perfectly, while also adding to the intrigue. As good as the story is, the artwork is equally good, if not better. The color selections made by Stjepan Bartolić pair perfectly with the artwork. This creates a cool and fitting art style for the story that’s being told.

Final Thoughts:

Killroy is Here #1 is a good kickoff for this brand-new series. The mystery and intrigue are sure to hook readers and have them coming back for more. The slow burn style of revealing the story will definitely make a lot of readers intrigued but may disappoint some readers that have less patients. Either way, Killroy is Here is setting up to be a really good story and series, and you should consider grabbing a copy well at the shop this week.

FINAL GRADE: 8.5/10
