*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Waid puts together a crazy back and forth between Earth and space situations. Batman’s call to arms screams volumes to the Queen’s threat. There is no shortage of pressure happening on the pages. Even internally, the struggle between Batman and Luthor to co-exist wears thin.
The same can be said concerning Guy Gardner and his team. His banter with Hawkgirl is explosive. There’s little time to react as the event starts gettng out of hand. Matters are made worse when the true villain emerges. Longtime DC readers know what to expect in this moment. As the fight with the Queen escalates, the writing shows the League on their backheels. There isn’t much room for error as they try a defense. It results in a very ingenious finish that plays out perfectly. The parting pages raise more eyebrows knowing tensions are still boiling. Readers wouldn’t want it any other way.

Mora and Ossio delve into the frantic pacing and deliver. The opening page is a bold full image in establishing the Queen. Batman’s friction with Luthor grows by each panel. Once the art detours to space, Gardner’s temper clashes with Hawkgirl. Both expressions threaten to focus on the problems at hand. This leads into a full shot of the main villain crashing the scene. Readers can fully appreciate the vibe from panels here.
Once back on Earth, the mood is more intense as the Queen advances. The panels versus Red Tornado speed up events to a fever pitch. It allows the pain and anguish of her attack to flood the panels. This leads into a tremendous close of events. The fallout jumps out even more. Batman and Luthor have been building for an combustible fight. Their expressions are at the final stage before a curve is thrown into play. Just when things can’t get more crazy, the final full page leaves events in a dire spot till next time. Great work all around.
FINAL GRADE: 8.6
