JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #17 by Mark Waid, Clayton Henry, Tamra Bonvillain & Ariana Maher (DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Waid implements one of the more crazier notions involving the already loaded roster. The opening in Bialya is an uncomfortable situation. Readers watch as a very unlikely team rescues the hostages from their captors. Before this moment sets in, events flashback to the conclusion of the tourney. As the combatants come back, there are clouds looming over their heads. Some more friendly than others. The writing doesn’t shy away from Superman’s absence. It leads to an impromptu meeting with a crisis management sense behind it.
Batman and Wonder Woman’s joint address holds no punches back. There’s a sense of resentment in Batman’s tone for Clark’s sacrifice. This pushes for events to resume normalcy. A train derailment in Central City proves more complicated than intended. Waid orchestrates a blurred look at heroes and villains. The dialogue showcases the frustration in how K.O. played out for some. This moves Bats and Wonder Woman to take a risky gamble. Readers watch with some disbelief as the closing pages opens Pandora’s box with some grave repercussions if this was the wrong call. Where this goes is absolutely wide open.
