JSA #20 (DC COMICS)

Vengeance rains down on the JSA!

The Spectre is on the loose and looking for a new host. This has forced the legendary team to attempt to stop the embodiment of Vengeance. Without a human host to reel him back, there’s no telling how far it will go to punish all in sight!

JSA #20 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) continues “The Search For The Spectre”!

Let’s take a closer look at the Spectre’s rampage.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire unleashes The Spectre’s as an unhinged presence. The opening pages show the lengths of blind delusion he finds himself in. It creates a terrifying reality the JSA are now thrust into. Their response is one of good intentions but ultimately fails. Watching the various members attempt to sacrifice themselves as hosts leaves more to the mission than previously thought. With all the rejection, what will satisfy the Spectre. The answer is not so easy to deliver.

Readers watch as the team breaks away for a possible lead. Lemire channels into the DCU mythos for a fantatsic detour. Implementing the House of Mystery and Madame Xanadu leads to a more lighter exchange. It results in a quick recap of the Spectre’s relationship with his most well-known host. The outcome leaves some puzzlement to be built up with. It compliments the rampage taking place in the city. As an unlikely candidate gets chosen, the mood instantly shifts into an uncomfortable spot. This pushes events right to the final page. Rest assured, no one is gonna guess who crashes the party on the final page. An excellent finish to the chaotic scene.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Olortegui & Guerrero open with a striking full page image of the Spectre’s reign. It easily creates fear for those guilty and innocent. Watching the spirit tear through all that stand in its way makes a bold proclamation. The heroes reactions echo the growing concern. This leads to Alan Scott flying into impending danger. The view aspects demonstrates The Spectre’s impact on all those around. It leads to some fun panel remixes of characters before turning the story into a new path.

The arrival at the House Of Mystery crafts an anxious feel with the panels. Watching the young JSA members creep through the house leads to a waiting guest star. Xanadu’s debut is greeted with a half panel. It leads to a pair of excellent full pages depicting Spectre and Jim Corrigan’s relationship. The art team does a very clever transition from this story back to the House of Mystery with the panels. Events cap off with the most unlikely appearance for this tale. The full page image cements the growing concern of the Spectre’s rage and all attempts to stop it. Can’t ask for much more than that.

FINAL GRADE: 9

The Spectre unleashes vengeance on all in his path in an excellent JSA chapter ! Lemire throws readers for some twists with the cameos involved. Olortegui & Guerrero deliver o the impact of the angry spirit. The timeless heroic themes of JSA never should leave comic readers’ sights!
