IRON MAN #4 by Joshua Williamson, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard, & Joe Caramagna (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson hits the pedal to the metal for this latest installment. Fixer’s torture of Adam Ware is cruel in every fashion. His banter with Masque proves there’s a touch of jealousy lurking inside him. It gives way to Tony’s latest dilemma. The writing shows his attempts to solve his own riddle. His meddling with his armor leads into contact with Ware. Their conversation is hopeful and flooding with Stark charm. It’s almost tipping a hand for something later in the issue.

Readers get a small break with the Citizen V storyline. The writing allows May to flex her muscles as she is on the chase. Once events shift back to Masque, Tony upstages her victory. Readers watch as the fighting commences. It is classic Iron man combat. This allows Tony to flex his brain power into creating an opening to swing momentum. The moment becomes short live as another force intervenes. Tony’s plans have now come back to haunt him if he should survive. A great cliffhanger ending to walk off on.

Carnero & Woodard delve into Ware’s torture to start events. The panels mirror Fixer’s enjoyment of his work. This leads into the confrontation with Masque. His bravado isn’t winning over anyone as Masque barks orders. A fantastic two page spread shows what Tony is up to in the meantime. It leads to a great bait and switch page before coming back to the main story. Once here, the conversation with Adam opens Stark up.

Their conversation is similar in structure. This gives Tony a chance to showcase his slick confidence. The art shows this off without failure. Behind the scenes, Fixer’s jealous responses are on full display. There is little time to dwell on these. A half panel of Iron Man in full suit starts up the action. Pacing picks up speed as the escape is on. The sense of danger never leaves these panels. Once in the closing phases, the art delivers a massive blow before going to finish. The final page leaves a near full shot for fans to ponder as a major showdown is about to throw down. Get ready!

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The high price of intelligence looks to collect on Tony Stark in this excellent chapter. Williamson pushes Stark into a deep reflection of his own thirst of knowledge with the writing. Carnero & Woodard present a great balance of action and drama. This run delivers on everything movie and comic fans could want from Tony Stark
