G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Sssilent Missions: COPPERHEAD #1 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

In 1983, Marvel Comics released G.I. Joe #21 by Larry Hama. The issue was entitled “Silent Interlude”. It is legendary not because its’ the first appearance of Storm Shadow.The Snake-Eyes driven story stood out for another reason.

The story had no dialogue.

Fast forward to April 2025 & G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is having a resurgence under the Skybound Entertainment Banner. The line decided to pay homage to this creative style of story telling with their“Silent Missions”one-shots.

The five issue run was so successful that they have now decided to run it back. This time, the focus is from the point of view of COBRA!

The team starts off with a simple theft from the GI Joes. Copperhead’s debut is swift and unapologetic. It’s as business serious as it gets. Readers watch as he enjoys the spoils of his score. The feeling isn’t one that lasts. Once behind closed doors, the mood shifts to a somber feel. Past memories break through the tough exterior to remind him of where he has grown from. This sparks another search for adventure. The result changes leads into an avenue with even higher stakes than advertised.

Panels rev up the excitement as a street race spins off its’ tracks. A full page displays the race’s interwinding dangers. It leads to a quick fix of confidence before speeding into another conflict. The next act sees Copper’s true personality in full swing. The bravado the writing lets on keeps compiling his true short comings. This leads into another death challenge. Another excellent full page kicks off events in deadly style. Readers watch as there is no forgiveness shown in the quest for the prize. It results more high-octane action and a solid finish. A mentally vicious cycle with no signs of ever slowing down.

FINAL GRADE: 8.5

Cobra’s resident thrill seeker speeds into his latest adrenaline fix with reckless abandon. The creative team taps into the constant need for challenge behind evil eyes. It sheds a few skins to unveil a new side to the Joe’s fearless foe..
