Gargoyles/Darkwing Duck #2 (Dynamite Comics)
Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 2nd issue of Gargoyles/Darkwing Duck crossover from Dynamite Comics!
If you grew up as a kid in the 90’s than there are a few cartoons you watched back then. X-Men, Batman & Ducktails certainly come to mind, but towards the top of the list has to be Gargoyles & Darkwing Duck. They’re two of the most popular cartoons of their time that had a massive impact on fans and pop culture. So it only makes sense for the two of them to meet up! So let’s jump into it!
Credit: Dynamite Comics // Gargoyles/Darkwing Duck #2 by Tad Stones (Plot & Main Cover), Greg Weisman (Plot & Script), Ciro Cangialosi (Art & Color), Agnese Eterno (Art), Jeff Eckleberry (Letterer) is a great issue that continues the strong storytelling from the 1st issue
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
The Story
Greg Weisman & Tad Stones pick up right where the first issue left off, and it hits the ground running immediately. Darkwing Duck, Goliath & Elisa Maza are hot on the trail of Demona who has Morgana Macawber in her clutches, as she’s in search of Quackronomicon. It’s a powerful object that Demona would use towards her ultimate goal of world domination.
This issue does a fantastic job at continuing the feel of both shows would give you when they were airing on TV back in the 1990’s. You’ve got Elisa using her detective skills to great effect, and you’ve got Demona scheming for world domination in some truly grandiose ways. Everything in the issue is written with such care that it really feels like it was taken from a script that was unused.
I really enjoyed the way the issue built up to it’s end, because I kept reading on thinking “this doesn’t feel like it’s the end of the story” and sure enough it isn’t over yet. Things take a left turn right at the end and leave it in a very interesting position that I’m excited to see play out. Plus, now that the rest of the Manhattan clan is involved I’m curious how epic the next issue is going to be.
The Artwork
Ciro Cangialosi & Agnese Eterno did as great a job with this issue as they did with the first issue. They still continue to capture how the look & feel of both of these classic shows. They also do a great job at blending the whimsical nature of Darkwing Duck with the grit of Gargoyles. It’s such a great job that I truly feel they both deserve some sort of award for it.
FINAL POINT: The incredible crossover continues with an issue that continues the series strong start. It’s a must read issue for every 90’s kid, and the artwork really helps transport you back to that golden time of your childhood. This is one crossover you do NOT want to wait to read.
Overall Grade: 9/10
