FANTASTIC FOUR #8 by Ryan North, Humberto Ramos, Victor Olazaba, Edgar Delgado & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

North takes readers on a journey through the life of Susan Storm never seen before. The beginnings draw back to their first mission versus the Mole Man. What seemed like a normal superhero battle slowly planted seeds on during darker. This is evident when Sue handles the Skrulls. The writing showcases a vicious side while others show concern. North camouflages this under the guise of new powers. As the story progresses, it is evident, that is not the case here.

The writing moves in and out from its’ ultimate form as more missions take place. It is a brilliant tactic to set up the huge twist. A lone dream transformers into a nightmarish reality for Susan Storm. Her inner monologue guides readers into the tragic view of events following. The scenes are stunning in what has happened. North keeps this theme up to a drastic measure in solving a slipping mental state. This sets the stage for a shocking final portion. Once events come full circle, the finished product looks to be the dire challenge the FF was fearing. The concept is so wild in execution that there’s no way not to be impressed with this issue.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!

Ramos and the art team start events with a throwback look to the original days of Lee and Kirby. The homage panels move into a recreation of that iconic first mission. It is an incredible full page image that captures attention. Once the fight moves towards the Skrulls, quiet changes in Sue’s expressions tip off more is lurking behind the scenes. Readers watch as the bait and switch tactic averts guesses long enough to let the turning point take hold.

Sue’s nightmare is gigantic with much destruction and guest stars involved. A full page image outside her hotel in France screams volumes of what transpired. The story heads back to New York City with Sue in a broken state. Ramos leans into the wild concept with how Storm handles this action. The panels show her broken state in a new and terrifying light. This evolves into something more sinister as things move forward. A full page image of Sue flying is surreal with what has happened. The following panels solidify that statement before the close. One more full image to close welcomes the danger to the stage. To say “business picked up” is an understatement.

FINAL GRADE: 9.6

“Find Susan Storm” was the wish but be careful what you wish for! North tells a tale of smoke and mirrors that readers are not ready for. Ramos and the art team give a deceptive view of the past before ushering a terrifying future. This run is everything you could want out of an FF series! Don’t miss it!
