Fantastic Four #17 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 17th issue of Fantastic Four from Marvel Comics!

The Fantastic Four don’t know who they are, or where they are! So what could go wrong! Let’s jump into it!

The Story

This issue was a lot of fun to read and it really put Marvel’s first family in a really interesting position that I don’t know if I’ve ever seen them in before. The issue features our main heroes on an alien world, or perhaps deep underground. We can’t be certain because they don’t know themselves. To make matters more interesting, the group has zero idea who they are or that they even have super powers.

It all makes for very compelling reading and in a way puts things in a place we haven’t seen since they first appeared on comics and were in this position of discovery. I really enjoyed the way Ryan North laid the story out and put a fun twist on a story that we’ve seen in various other forms of media. It really gives it an old school feel to the issue that makes it super accessible to readers who might not be up to date with what’s going on in the series right now.

Of course this is all a tie in to the ongoing DNX event, and the ending does a great job to remind you of that. The slow burn approach being taken with the DNX overall story is sure to be ramping up soon, and you can definitely expect the Fantastic Four to be at the forefront of that story.

The Artwork

Vincenzo Carratu & Edgar Delgado are in charge of the artwork for this issue. They do a great job keeping the familiar look fans of the series will be familiar with, while also giving it a unique feel with the out of time nature of the story. You really get an old school sense of style with the artwork, but it’s still done in a modern way that keeps the look readers are familiar with. As good as the story was, the artwork really bolstered it with some of the situations we got to see our heroes in.

Overall Grade: 7/10

A great issue that gives an old school feel to the issue. Ryan North’s story captures some fun in a story that’s sure to get serious before too long. Along with artwork that compliments the story very well, this is an issue definitely worth your time.
