The Story

Charles Soule is on a role with another great issue of a Star Wars comic. It doesn’t matter what era of the galaxy far, far away it’s in because if Charles Soule is writing it then it’s going to be a great issue. It’s also amazing to see just how much he’s peeling back on Kylo Ren in his time between The Last Jedi & The Rise Of Skywalker because it’s a time period that didn’t get a lot of focus. Perhaps I could be wrong, but I don’t remember a ton of books or stories coming out filling in the gaps during those two films. So to get them now is nice, and it’s better late then never.

The story in this issue takes an interesting turn from what we’ve seen in the prior two issues and that makes sense. We sure don’t know what it is we saw at the end of the last issue, so why would Kylo? So to get a bit of a backstory as to what is going on here was a welcome change and helped flesh things out in a very interesting way. I like the way the story switches between the backstory being told and the present with General Hux & General Pryde. The two stories play off each other really well because you need the time to explain why things are the way they are, but at the same time they are about to head into battle so time is of the essence.

Charles Soules writing really shines in this issue and shows why he’s easily the best storyteller in Star Wars right now. His ability to tell a good story, while also fleshing that story out in a really compelling way. He’s able to take a relatively short time period and flesh it out with some really great stories that build off one another in some spectacular ways.

The Artwork

Will Sliney & Guru-eFX are in charge of the artwork for the issue and they both do a fantastic job with the art. The backgrounds of the panel are so incredibly detailed that it feels like they could be used as a storyboard for an upcoming film. I also love the way they’re able to bring the live action characters to life in the 2D format in such a spectacular way. The action sequences are also stunning to look at and really stand out as some of the artists best work.

Overall Grade: 8/10

Charles Soule is delivers an incredible story that is a wonderful mix of backstory and action. Together with artwork that is incredibly lifelike, this is an issue Star Wars fans shouldn’t wait to check out.
