END OF LIFE #3 by Kyle Starks, Steve Pugh, Chris O'Halloran, & Becca Carey (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Starks has really been having some fun with this series. The opening sequence with Richard Smiley addressing his crew is loud and hysterical. It plays into the overall feel of this series. Once he makes the connection to the Menagerie, the book takes a more serious turn. George’s health issues become a challenging experience for the inept Eddie. The dialogue has a bit more seriousness to it, while maintaining Eddie’s dense nature. As events shift to the gas station, more heavy moments come through in conversation.
The discussion with Sophie forces Eddie to start accepting what is happening with his dad. Starks weaves in the humor as needed while Sophie schools him on what he should realize is happening. It leads to an unexpected talk with his dad upon hearing of a man in town with a chicken head. Eddie’s confrontation with Big Cock goes as one might think. Readers watch as the near unstoppable assassin causes much chaos. This pushes Eddie into uncomfortable territory. Their fight comes off like a wild Friday the 13th chase. it is absolutely perfect in structure. This moves events into a strong close with a great tease for what’s coming next. This series just doesn’t miss.

Pugh & O'Halloran begin matters with Smiley’s round table discussion. The scenes have a comedic flair to them while letting Smiley preach to the crew. This moves events onward to the Stallion house. Eddie’s badly timed reactions to his dad’s accident takes readers in a few avenues. His reactions are so oblivious to what is really happening. This ultimately leads him to his “safe haven” of the gas station. Panels start taking a more grounded look once Sophie starts addressing him. Her tired demeanor clashes with his clueless behavior. A near full panel closes in on Sophie’s explanations. Eddie still denies it as he exits the building. Readers watch as he never breaks his bravado-led stride. This reconnects at home with Dad.
Once word breaks about Big Cock, Eddie heads into town to find him. The side shot of him walking through town caters to the small town picture he can’t stand. Panels showcasing Big Cock checking his phone lead everyone into the eventual fight. A near full shot showcases the first blow. Following panels feel like “They Live” meets “Family Guy” as their fight scatters through town. A half panel shows off the fiery side of Eddie’s work this leads into a loud finish before another great parting shot. Another characetr gets a full last page, sending everything on a major collision course. Excellent work in the pages here.
FINAL GRADE: 9.6
Big Cock’s arrival means nothing good for Eddie’s attempt to stay alive in another can’t miss chapter. Starks balances the humor and drama out perfectly. Pugh & O'Halloran deliver can’t mis images readers will need to do a double take for. There is nothing quite like End Of Life at the shops today!
