STORY OVERVIEW:

D’orc with his trusty Shield and his Ghost Chicken companion are escaping up a cliff to get away from the forces that are hunting them down. When they get to the top of the cliff, they discover that there was an ambush set up for them, which has been spoiled by some mysterious assailants who have killed all the warriors from both sides. Before they can figure out what took out the warriors, these strange kids appear. They find out quickly that they are Orphan Time Thieves working for the Time Lord. Every time one of the Thieves or Lord cuts or stabs them, it steals time from them, making them old and eventually killing them. Will our rag tag group be able to defeat the Time Lord and his Orphan’s?

WRITING:

This story is a lot of fun and mixes an epic journey with a lot of humor. Brett Bean has crafted this tale like an epic saga but then injected it with some amazing comedic beats. The chemistry between the three main characters is both entertaining and heartwarming. You feel a real sense of comradery between them, which makes you care for them. At the same time Bean makes you laugh with their banter in between mixing up with other characters. Speaking of other characters, the Orphan Time Thieves are completely out of left field but fit this story perfectly. The way they are taken advantage of by the Time Lord gives them a unique redeeming quality. But let’s be honest seeing D’orc punch children is funny in its own.

For as fun and humorous as this issue is, Bean also gives it a fitting and more serious end to move the story forward. The decision to have D’orc be selfless and prove even to a small group that the prophecy may be wrong really sets the table for where the story is going.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue and series captures the fun nature of the story. Brett Bean uses a Saturday Morning Cartoon style to great effect in this book. The artwork gives you that whimsical and childlike feeling that compliments the fun and more adult humor the story has in store for the reader. Bean’s art also helps with the Lord of the Rings style of the land that we find ourselves in. Tying the artwork together is Jean-François Beaulieu’s color pallet. The colors are bright and very cartoonish which really compliments the artwork perfectly. The art team on this book really nails the art and keeps the reader focused on every panel.
