STORY OVERVIEW:

After running over Louis three times with his car, Doc Beacon is let go by the Sheriff saying that the murder was committed in self-defense. Now Doc Beacon must figure out how he will deal with Sam and how to split the gold teeth. At the same time, Lady Myra, Lord Auberon’s Maid, has gone to the Sheriff to report him missing. She tells him the last place he went was to the dentist and never returned home. Now the Sheriff goes to visit Doc Beacon in hopes of getting some answers, but will this turn out to be a mistake?

WRITING:

This issue takes the story to the next level and ups the ante on the murderous way of the Doc. Rafael Scavone ups the murderous nature of the good doctor as he continues his spiral into criminal madness. The sick nature of Doc Beacon’s crimes well still convincing everyone that he is a good man makes this story that much more sinister. Scavone exploring how far the madness can truly go is what is driving this issue and series. The choice to put the supernatural properties of the talisman on the back burner and not give us more than a tease was an interesting choice. But the story is still moving forward, and the sinister nature of the Doc keeps this issue fresh and a great read.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue perfectly reflects the heart of the story. Eduardo Ferigato skillfully brings out those moments of dark humor through his illustrations, well at the same time delivering horrific scenes. Each scene unfolds just as you might picture it while reading, highlighting Ferigato’s artistic talent. The choice of colors enhances the visuals and establishes the right atmosphere. Additionally, Deyvison Manes' lettering amplifies the mood and tone, making the narrative easy to follow and helping convey the reader’s intended emotions.

Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #4 is a solid addition to this series that really ups the ante on the murderous nature of Doc Beacon. After this issue there is no doubt that Doc Beacon has embraced the dark side and took a turn towards murder. The dark humor is still in the story between the artwork and uncomfortable jokes, making this issue as enjoyable as the ones before.
