The issue has a compilation of multiple stories. Due to the amount, the overview of each tale will be shorter than usual reviews.
“HAWK GIRL SUMMER” by Fitzmartin, Hetrick, Filardi, & Lanham
Hawkgirl gets invited to a billionaire’s party with an ancient amulet on display. Tying into her past, Kendra Saunders knows what power it possesses. Another vested party wants the amulet for herself for different reasons. The writing focuses in on Catwoman and Hawkgirl’s hidden past. It leads to a fun adventure of tying to get the upper hand. The art hits the key points in illustrating their contrast and similarities in personalities. Readers watch the excitement take over as the pair fin themselves on the same side, leading to an enjoyable finish.
“Quick and Shining” by Weekes, Čižmešija, Segala, & Brosseau
The attention goes to the Shinning Knight as Ystin deals with summer at the beach, along with handling finding a swimsuit being bigender. It doesn’t take long on Earth-0 for hijinks to ensue. The writing brings the drama as the beach becomes a battlefield. Readers also see an unlikely assist from Kid Quick (Earth -11). Panels flood with great art as the pair goes to handle business. Readers get some great action splashes. The writing tackles the earlier issue with grace and strength before closing with a perfect fun shot earned for the featured hero. This was a great story.
“All the Good Ones Are Taken” by Trujillo, Drilon, Big Door Studio, & Gattoni
When Bunker, Tim Drake, Jackson Hyde and Natasha Irons attempt to escape their relationship woes at Sturges Beach, the get-away is upended by Psycho Pirate. The writing focuses on their struggles on keeping relationships in the superhero world. There are plenty of other guest heroes representing the lgbtqia+ community featured at the beach party going through the same emotions. It leads to the original foursome to take down the pirate once and for all. There is a great sequence of Bunker overcoming his self doubt to take care of the villain. It makes for a great finish and gives some hope for all feeling the pressures of dating in this current timeline.
“HOTTER THAN HELL” by Lim, MacColl & Lanham
Grace Choi and Thunder move into a rental house and things get hot quickly….literally. Sabbac crashes the housewarming and the fight ensues. Solid writing stages the pair as a formidable force against the devilish heat. Readers watch as the pair out strategize the more powerful being to a thunderous finish. Great art set the stage with a fantatsic final panel to wrap up events on.

“Lawless on the Lido Deck” by Frattino, Perez, Guerrero, & Wands
Kid Eternity and the high seas don’t mix. While on a cruise ship, the new JSA member gets more than she bargained for when Black Manta crashes the party. The writing stages the young hero with no chance to win but never quitting. The art flourishes in bringing the JSA’er powers out when needed. This one packed a nice surprise finish before reminding everyone: don’t take her to sea. Ever.
“Idle Hands” by Chiffon, CLe, & Sibal
What happens when you bring the entire Wayne family on a yacht. Nothing but pure chaos as the boys get kicked off the yacht and into a beach carnival. This was a fun tale showcasing the usually brooding lot in a fun, relaxed manner. The art let the heroes be a but more “human” in their emotions especially Jason Todd. There’s a great two page splash that shows the Waynes never takes a day off. A fitting end to a story that’s all about family.
“Greetings from Shell Beach, Apokolips” by Pérez & Bennett
The title says it all. Big Barda and Mister Miracle head for a nice day out at the beach. Like all good plans, that doesn’t last long when Giganta hits the beach. The writing shows the ensuing trouble with some flair. Readers are gifted a series of impressive two-page splashes. It helps add more gravity to the wild scenario playing out. I doubt anyone is ready for the last panel o the page. Solid story overall.
“The Superboy Experience” by Scott, Loureiro, Guimarães & Reed
Connor Kent investigates the Metropolis Marina to find an A.I. version of himself as the main attraction. Once something short circuits, it’s a mad dash to fight a robotic version of himself (heat vision and all). The writing shows how tampering with tech like this is never smart. Readers see the art bring the surprise action as Connor must fight to save lives while his clone is going haywire. The ending makes a smooth landing while reminding all there’s nothing like the real thing.
FINAL GRADE: 8.5
A fun look at the DCU enjoying the summertime provides eight short stories worth checking out at the LCS. Seeing the heroes take a break from the more serious affairs allows for an enjoyable tour through the DCU. Plus you’ll never see Darkseid in the same light again.
