The story is broken down into two parts with Snyder, Greene, Herms and Wands tackling his tortured beginnings. The writing shows the painful upbringing that forged his current state of mind. It is complimented by a series of bold art images. This allows Darkseid to dive into his latest world target: Earth-3. The battle with the Crime Syndicate shows his cold brutality as he decimates the dark version of the Justice League. A fantastic two page spread from Greene cements this point. Once he crosses Ultraman, He divulges into the correlation between he and Superman, no matter the planet. Seeing how the connection is made, the recap of Darkseid’s “Absolute plans” come to the forefront.
Greene’s incredible artwork stands out in these moments. Using a same page set-up for the fight with the Crime Syndicate, the phenomenal full pages walk readers into the reasons behind each Absolute trinity version. It is a haunting breakdown of how Darkseid planned this attack out. The visuals here are mind-blowing as to the detail of his thoughts. Once events head to the conclusion, the final full page leaves a dark warning to all for what lies ahead. An impressive opening to the insights of a mad genius.

Williamson and Putri take “Harbinger” with an unlikely star taking the stage. It has been quite some time since reader saw Pandora appear. The opening recaps where she was last seen until her then demise. Once Darkseid pulls her from the darkness, the writing shows a more sinister purpose to the act. The interaction leaves a puzzling response in its’ wake. Putri’s art locks in on the rage behind Darkseid until thrown a statement he can’t shake. The result is a new stat quo for Pandora via full page spread. It moves events towards a brooding finish where all bets are off for the future.

Darkseid returns with ill intentions for the DCU as a look to his past redefines his future. Snyder and Williamson stage a dark portrait of the blind quest for power. Greene and Putri floor readers with amazing visuals at every turn! Only 3 things are certain: Death, Taxes and Darkseid IS!
