*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Phillips begins with a display of flashbacks intertwined with Matt’s past losses. This allows Omen to get closer to his master plan. Readers see an unlikely save come in to help. It is one with strings attached. The writing shows Murdock and his “savoir” exchange some barbs while trying to get refocused on stopping the killer. It exposes something else: self-doubt. Seeing Murdock struggle to fight grounds him leading into his next move.
Readers watch as the supporting cast gets a solid amount of page time this issue. Harlen Vale’s time teases his ulterior motives involved with a secret project. It makes its’ mark before turning reigns over to a more tragic portion. Detective Forte and Callahan’s partnership hasn’t been easy. Their dialogue reflects this as Forte scolds Callahan concerning the case. This tension leads into their closing act. While investigating the Omen, readers watch as they are clearly in over their heads. It leads to a shocking close teasing more danger en route. Solid finish for the straight-forward chapter.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Garbett and Martin begin with a nine grid flashback sequence. Seeing Matt relive his father’s murder crafts an eerie sense to begin events. The Omen’s mannerisms are devious in all fashions. His brutal attack on Murdock leads to a shocking finish. Seeing who helped Daredevil get a near full page panel. Their exchange is tense as Murdock tries finding a way out. This results in a great half panel shot of concluding this meeting. The art doesn’t shy away from Daredevil questioning his actions. A close-up on Matt’s face speaks volumes before passing the spotlight onto the others.
Harlen Vale’s panels are more misleading in public. His expressions put on a poker face until he dips away. Once here, readers sense there’s more to his methods than tipped off. It falls behind Forte and Callahan’s pages. Panels show the pair breaking under the pressure of the case. Forte’s overflowing with rage about the Omen’s killings. This leads to a tragic final act. Their encounter is given another nine panel grid shot to build up the terror occurring. This leads to a horrifying final full page. Readers can expect to be shook up concerning this farewell moment.
FINAL GRADE: 8.5
Has Matt Murdock discovered fear? Phillips challenges Murdock’s self confidence in an excellent read. Garbett and Martin construct a terrifying glimpse into the Omen’s world with stunning art. A devilish case gets more exciting by the minute.
