CLAYFACE: CELEBRITY DIRT #4 by Jude Ellison S. Doyle, Fran Galán, Patricio Delpeche, & Tom Napolitano (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Doyle tackles this story on two fronts. The first being the imposter Clayface and his dealing with a reporter. Their dialogue reflects the arrogance of Hollywood while being pressed for questions. It draws a strong reaction from “Clayface” as the subject matter strikes a nerve. This continues to evolve under the backdrop of Kalro’s own personal investigation.

Readers watch as the subject matter dives into the effects of Losilmix, which has a personal connection to Karlo, His talk with Dr. October cyphers through long standing theories till it lands on a safe spot to branch from. Doyle circles back to the original plot to give a classic horror moment as the story draws near its’ close. Karlo’s drive to be a “hero” is strong as he tries to help. This puts him in the line of fire with another key player who’s been manipulating things from the start. It results in a major reveal to walk off with more wonder looming. Very solid story.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Galán & Delpeche keep panels very tight as they lock in on smoke and mirrors with the imposter. Panels with the reporter show how devious his delivery is in this role. It allows Dr. October to take a great swing in her lab. Clayface’s reaction start venting the frustration building inside. This clashes with great flashback sequences, adding needed horror into the moment.

Each lead keeps their expressions consistent as things progress. Karlo’s sad looks show his genuine caring to try saving his friend. It is a new look to the Batman rogue, while his counterpart relishes in his new role. This moves panels into a vintage look with the terror set up perfectly. Panels never hold back on driving the insanity forward in the serial killer’s looks. By contrast, Karlo’s confrontation with the mysterious manipulator hit its mark. It stages the finish with a horrifying reveal via full page. Readers aren’t ready for this close.

FINAL GRADE: 8.5

Karlo gets answers he’s not prepared for as the body count rises in a terrifying chapter. Doyle crafts the horror perfectly to cement the stakes involed. Galán & Delpeche craft an uneasy feel throughout. A terrifying look inside a broken vision of Hollywood dreams and Gotham nightmares.
