The issue doesn’t delay in bringing the action early. With the raid on the camp, pacing becomes frantic as readers try piecing together what is going on. Even as Charlie stops one of the invaders, the dialogue indicates more is happening at the camp. Dr. Swann’s charisma takes hold during these scenes. More secrets are teased as the camp recovers from the attack. It is a solid build into the latter portion of the book. Before we get there, another major player makes his presence felt.
Charon’s capturing of Juniper causes the tale to head into a darker tone. The writing slowly unveils the vicious plans he has in store. Readers watch as his cold persona only fuels more anger in his prisoner. This is a bleak time in comparison to the Forum. The overwhelming sense of comfort grows amongst the group. Only one challenges the good times. Charlie’s interaction with Jo is heartfelt. It lays out her doubts due to past events. This pushes events toward the closing section. Even when ground is set, the writing shakes events up again. The closing pages present a startling dilemma. How it plays out remains to be seen. For now, a steady finish to an ever-evolving journey.

Favoccia and Cogar start with a recurring flashback to Charlie’s past. The moment is brief but enough to plant the seeds for a larger moment later on. Once the attack on the Forum starts, the panels speed through the quick conflict. This builds up to a dramatic escape. The art captures the aftermath and all its’ devastation. Dr. Swann’s proclamations don’t fall in silence. Charlie’s reactions tell a story all its’ own. It serves as a great pivoting point to another sub-plot brewing in the shadows.
Readers watch as Charon’s menacing takes center stge. Juniper’s rage is pouring on each panel. This is combated by Charon’s unemotional response. It is broken up by a fantatsic two page splash. The images capture the hopeful joy of escaping the Shroud nightmare. Charlie’s conversation with Jo displays the weight of the Shroud’s impact on her. This moves into the final pages and what is unwrapped there. There are a few twists added into play that conclude with a strong parting shot. Another great display of visuals in this fantasy world.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
The truth of the Forum begins to unravel with Charlie caught in its’ web. The Snyders’ writing hits a key balance of drama and conflict. Favoccia and Cogar shine with their impressive images throughout the transforming environment. This series is one not to pass on for your comic collection.
