Camp dishes up a highly emotional issue with Rabbit’s current fight. The opening segment teases a dream state while the child hangs on. It shows her visions distract from the horrible reality of events. Barely surviving the attack, Cara’s sole focus is to save her daughter. This includes working with Poke as her paranoia grows wildly out of control.
Readers watch as they look to find some sanctuary at a run down hospital. The sense of hope flickers for a brief time as Cara feels elated to arrive. It quickly tampers as cold reality sets in. Camp also stages Poke in a peculiar point for this moment. His thoughts race knowing that Rabbit’s future may have been decided already. There’s genuine care on display as he processes the danger forthcoming. It moves events into a strong final act. Once here, Poke makes a deal with his conscious on what to to with Rabbit. This leads to an uneasy landing spot where nothing is for certain on the future. Excellent read.

art and lettering:
Morian & Bartolić open with a stellar first page. The simple tones bringing the winter walk to life stage the journey into some deceiving places. A half panel of Rabbit surrounded by actual “rabbits” offers a glimpse of peace. It is followed by uneasy looks of the true nature of survival. Cara’s expressions speak volumes as her worry takes hold. This becomes even more heightened as she attempts to handle a dangerous liability.
The journey leads to a fantastic two page spread. Readers watch as Cara’s eyes tell quite a tale as they attempt to save Rabbit. Otsmane-Elhaou’s lettering makes these panels pop as Cara’s actions struggle to find the intended goal. This moves to a powerful half panel of Poke standing over a wounded Rabbit. Panels begin to drive up the tension as things fall apart. This moves events to the final act where Poke’s secrets become revealed via half panel. It drives home the desperation with a strong full shot before moving to a somber epilogue. The final image sends chills while eluding to a greater action.
FINAL GRADE: 9.4
The valiant effort to save Rabbit pushes Poke into an uncomfortable state as things fall apart fast. Camp’s writing never mis-steps on driving the emotional points home. Morian & Bartolić craft a tragic journey into fleeting hope with the art. This is anything but a typical zombie story.
