BATWOMAN #5 by Greg Rucka, Dani, Matt Hollingsworth, & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Rucka leans into the cult’s insanity to prove a chilling close for this chapter. The leading pages tease how unglued Mother Despina has become. With her minions in place, she prepares for the prophecy. It is a stark contrast form Batwoman and Montoya’s search. Chasing after the imposter Batwoman leads into more dark areas of the Cult. The wriitng hones in on Kate’s aggressive search with meaningful results.

It leads to an all too personal confrontation for Kate. Storming the Cult’s gates leads into an uncomfortable reunion. The writing is exceptional in driving home the delicate handling of Kate’s discovery. Readers watch as the situation unfolds in a few versions before its’ final form. Once here, Kate’s plans play with smoke and mirrors to a shocking conclusion. The parting pages wrap up events with more questions than answers. Rest assured, one door might have closed, but there are many miles still left to trek concerning the Dark Faith.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Dani & Hollingsworth present the intrgue early and often with this issue. Despina’s lead to the prophecy taps into the classic Greek lore of architecture. There is an extremely ancient feel to the panels as Despina walks the halls. Watching Batwoman race through the city on motorcycle hits a new gear as the pace speeds up. Her confrontation with Gores is unapologetic as she looks for answers. What she finds changes up the dynamic.

Readers get a return to Despina with a new soul at her disposal. The disturbing “bedtime story” read captures readers as one broken soul slips further away. This only worsens when Kate arrives to investigate. The panel remain silent to exemplify her discoveries. A series of half panels show Kate accepting what she sees and reacts accordingly. Each panel escalates the drama further to a breaking point. In this moment, the story goes for broke in closing. The final act becomes complicated as Despina’s narration spins the broken visuals into a new form. This leads into a fantastic final page leaving readers with much to break down in its’ wake.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Kate Kane makes one last attempt to stop the Dark Faith but not without strings attached. Rucka pens a deeply moving chapter. Dani & Hollingsworth deliver on impactful imagery to cement this latest discovery. A stunning conclusion to a winding tale of danger and mystery.
