BATWOMAN #3 by Greg Rucka, Dani, Matt Hollingsworth, & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Rucka plunges Kane further into her dire situation. Causing such a public incident has major ripple effects. The cult is very aware of this and play it off to their advantage. Readers watch as Kate struggles to accept what has transpired. The same can be said for her father Jacob. His confrontation with Dr. Sidaris is gruff, but exposes his true caring for his daughter. The moment is cut short by Jacob’s wounds reopening. This prompts Jacob to make a call for help. The recipient is well aware of the situation but is non-committal to rushing to aid.
This rolls over to the Cult’s hold over the city. A meeting with Brigader General Verdanis is prime example. Mr. Gores and Master Slay’s presence causes quite a stir in the scenes. They’re going to great lengths to cover tracks. It results in a strong finishing act. Batwoman’s mission leads her into direct conflict. The action spills how unfocued Kate has become with this task. Luckily, her back-up arrives to assist. Rucka taps into the personal history which causes more angst between both. This breathes life into the final moments. No one will see what’s coming as an action is taken with drastic repercussions.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Dani & Hollingsworth open with a two page spread of doctors looking for Kate. Her time reflecting on the actions of the night are presented with a huge punch. Kate’s eyes show the swirling thoughts to comprehend what is going on. This leads into a more tense interaction between Dr. Sidaris and Jacob. Each panel broods with more intensity as Jacob strives for answers. Panels carry this energy to the doctor’s talk with Kate. Seeing how all parties are being crushed under the situation’s gravity, it gives more importance to Jacob’s call to a friend.
The seedy talk with the Brigader leads into the dark corners of this story. Each reaction pours more fuel on the Cult’s grip of Petalon. It provides a sound transition point to Kate’s mission. Her conflict with Pagona is gifted a fantastic two page spread. This allows Renee Montoya to enter the complicated web. Panels mirror the deep rooted feelings between both. The art distracts so much of the plot that readers won’t see the ending happening until its too late. A bold panel closes up events with much to be discussed next chapter.
FINAL GRADE: 9
Kate Kane’s journey into action leads back to an old friend as Petalon continues to crush her will. Rucka’s writing keeps applying pressure on Kate to break and fight. Dani & Hollingsworth construct amazing images of this shifting new world. This is the Batwoman saga fans have been waiting for!
